Here's where it all started:

Herman Finklemeyer sent me the parts for a Jaildoor F1 using the rules for his new class, "Classic Retro".  The rules are pretty clear so it makes my job pretty easy :)

The NSR motor is only a jig motor.

The body is a BRM (British Racing Machine) H16.  The real car was called a "16" because they took two flat 8 cylinder engines and connected them.  I don't know what the "H" stands for.

My bracket will be a Professor Motor "BWA" style.  Pretty stout, and will only need a little bracing.

First step, planning and jigging.

Sounds a neat new project Pablo :)

What motor is going to be going in it seeing as the NSR one is just a jig motor ?

This should be a cool build to watch :D

Paul, Herman will decide what actual motor to use. He assured me it will be the exact same size.

Here is Jackie Stewart in one of the original cars.

The body is a BRM (British Racing Machine) H16.  The real car was called a "16" because they took two flat 8 cylinder engines and connected them.  I don't know what the "H" stands for.

Clarifications:

BRM stands for "British Racing Motors"

The car itself was a BRM P83 (1966) or P115(1967).

The official engine designation was BRM P75 H16. The "H" refers to its configuration - two flat 8 engines, one on top of the other, with connected crakshafts, essentially an "H" turned on its side.

Lotus also used the H16 engine in the Lotus 43, with which Jim Clark managed one GP win. In general the H16 was excessively complex, overweight, unreliable and had too high a Center of Gravity to be competitive.

The jig motor height is .603

.603/2=3.015 + .063 = .3645 X 2 = .729 is the rear wheel OD that would be optimum for this motor size given a non-hypoid motor bracket and .063 clearance.

I wish the rules makers would mandate the correct size rear wheels for the motor sizes to be used.

That way the world would be mathematically perfect and the motor and bracket would sit exactly at ground zero, But, other factors are in play. Like scale considerations. Oh well, we build according to the rules, and in this case, min gear OD is about .649, which requires about a .775 OD rear wheel.

The bracket and motor is going to have to sit slightly higher than ground zero.

After trying many different combos of main rail sizes in an attempt to achieve this, I settled on .078 piano wire. It raises the bracket to the level of the 26T Parma Pink.  Here we have the twin 078 rails tacked in to the Professor Motor bracket notches.

Sturdy looking bracket Pablo , doesn't look like it would need much bracing ,if any at all .

Eagerly awaiting to see this jaildoor F1 !

Cobra tongue, custom trimmed, with a steel doubler floated on top.

Aluminum tube keeps the holes aligned and solder will not adhere.

Cobra tongue is .750 wide. Trimmed to .740, it is a perfect fit inside the main rails.

Sometimes you just get lucky :D

No tilt required on the tongue assembly, because the rules mandate .063 level clearance front to rear.

If the top of the (.050 thick) Cobra tongue is made flush with the tops of the .078 rails, it will work perfect for a "cut-down" flag.

Nice !

of course it will be BRG ...

:hi: Thanks Dennis,

I didn't know that .. sounds messy. Wait,.......... an H on its side is an I ... No?

Not one but Two crakshafts.. :laugh2:

The only problem I'm having with this build is, incorporating "jaildoor" :shok:

My original intention was to build a small Cukras 1967 F1 imitation, built to fit the H16 body.

BUT, once I discovered the motor and bracket needed to be elevated to accomodate the rules,

everything changed.  The use of .078 rails makes the motor/bracket sit perfect. That was an engineering decision I found irresistable.  Once you jack the rail height up to .078, everything downstream changes, and follows along.  I wanted to make a cool retro race car that would be competitive.  I'm going to end up with a pure racecar.  No drop arm. No brass jaildoor. All I can say is, it's legal within the rules.  Cukras' 1967 F1 had the forward pin tubes close to the front axle, mounted solid.  His rear pin tube was a 1/16 "tube within a tube" which provided a good amount of body movement in the rear. Mine is plumbed forward......front pin tubes move very little, and rear tubes are very loosey goosey.

Bob, my BRG will be Parma Faskolors green with a few drops of black :)

Pablo,

The only thing in this class that has to be Jail Door is the body. I didn't take any other rules from the jail door class. You're doing great.

Thanks for the vote of confidence, Hermann. :D

Body mount/management system is done, I hope it works.

The forward part of the square tube houses the .055 wire hinge.

.063 brass rod fills the rest of the tube.

My new tin snips work great ! Eat your heart out, dc-65x :laugh2:  I got tools !! :aggressive:

Used 'em to make a "Clow Platform", 15 thou brass sheet at ground zero, designed for placement of lead weight up front.

Into the tumbler she goes.  Now, where did I put those doggone paint brushes ? :laugh2:

Quality control/Tech nazi.  He will bite you if the tolerances are off. :laugh2:

DSC07579.JPG

The .055 wire inside the tubing and all associated knicknacks result in a little movement up front, and about .063 rear, plus some side to side wiggle.

DSC07604.JPG

The forward .015 thick Clow Platform is where the weight will go.
