I need some help building a couple of jail door chassis. Are there any articles of posts on building them. How do you get the bend in the drop arm for the flag? I also need to know where or who sells the brass weights, wheels and tires. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

I know JK makes JD tires. Here's a link to some JK tire info:  http://www.jkproduct...ireList2010.pdf . It's been so long since I've run a JD car, I forget what diameters are required; check the list for the desired diameters(1/8" axle).

Bob,

Check out the Independent Scratchbuilder Forum here on SlotBlog and put your prodigious Retro building skills to work.  As far as weights, I can give you a couple.  "scratchbuilt.com" is also another useful sight.  If you're looking to build replicas then you'll need to look on E-Bay for wheels, tires, guides,  etc.  If just for racing jaildoors then you can use modern components.  Alpha has a number of colors in 7/8" dia., you'll just have to cut down the width (from the outside) for clearance.  TrueScale offers some nice 3" wide bodies to fit the general width rules.

In the Retro Forum here on SlotBlog there is a sub-forum on scratch-built jaildoors using the 1966 R&C rule set.  Personally, I prefer the 1967 Car Model rules you were sent last week.

..... I forget what diameters are required....

1967 Car Models rules call for 7/8" front and back.

I've never built one of this class of race car, but I've built plenty of jaildoors.

Since you posted this under "R & C",  I assume that is what you want to build.

Start by doing lots of reading and planning.

Read this thread; the rules are in post # 12.

Im really into this jail door thing! The cars are just plain beautiful ! The R&C rules are what I want to follow. Body detail and just plain FUN ! Don we need to do this as a maybe... once a year race at SOF. This type of building is way to cool just to let it go. I still have my Dads old slot box Hoffman type to fill.

thanks to all

Keep the info coming !

I have some RGEO guide flag brass collar thingies if you need one.

As far as "weights", since I have no experience in this class, I don't know what kind you mean.

I do have some vintage style weights, don't know if that's what you want....

Bryan Warmack sells the basic drop arms and collars all pre-bent. It's basically the outer rail of the drop arm so you just add the inner rails. They are good and we have not had to use the old style big guide weight. I have found putting lead toward the rear of the drop arm works best on just about al tracks.

Most guys out here use ProTrack front and rears. Some fair the fronts to make them a bit harder. Also, HVR was making rears with wonder rubber which really works on these cars because is to not have them stuck otherwise they tip. You want some looseness.

I've put together many of them for folks and with a Falcon 2 I would say start with 8/28 gearing.

Body wise, the Lotus 40 is the most popular. The Lola T70 is the next choice.

Most of the winning cars out here are around 115 to 120 grams.

Make that coat the fronts to make them harder.

Check Duffy's Digs

He has built a bunch of these and has posted much on the subject.

Bob I have built more than a dozen Jail Door chassis that compete in the Retro East series races. The Pro Track tires work well and also like Noose said if you can get a pair of Wonder rubber rears from HVR they work well. The brackets come from Bryan Warmack and Duffy makes some beautiful ones too. For the drop arm you can get prebent wire from Mr Warmack that forms the center rail around the guide "widget".  I have a few Widgets I can send to you. I have also built the drop arm flat and then bent the front in a small vise.  It bends easily since it is all brass rod.  You can see some of my JD chassis in the "Mike Katz Chassis Builds" post under the scratchbuilding heading.

Hey Bob, by any chance did you race HO cars in NJ going back about 15-20 years?

I figured the odds were pretty high that there would be two guys with the same name into slot cars.

Dig through the jail door threads and chassis building, there's a whole tutorial on what's legal and what's not for the organized jail door racing if that's the direction your heading.  We race them occasionally at various Retro East events

And here, Mike Steube shows an easy way to build a drop arm:
