Never forget that first place goes to the racer with the MOST laps, not the racer with the FASTEST lap

Well, Sebastien set a new record that will be tough to beat in the next few years, leaving the next guy WAY behind... like the better part of... a minute!

Sebastien Loeb and Peugeot smashed the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb record at the nine-time World Rally champion's first attempt on Sunday.

Loeb and Peugeot's specially constructed car had been the pacesetters throughout the week. Having earned the first position in the Unlimited category starting order with his pace in qualifying, Loeb produced a time of 8m13.878s, a minute and a half under the previous record.

Porsche sports car star Romain Dumas, who was second on the road, went off in his attempt.

Rhys Millen and Jean-Philippe Dayraut also beat the previous record, but were 49 seconds and 1m29s behind Loeb's time, respectively.

Unbelievable time!!!

Great drive up the mountain by Loeb!!!

This was also the first year that the whole course was paved too, no more dirt sections at all.

Philippe is correct. Last year was the first. That is why times went to 9:46. This year they dropped due to a good driver and a hugh factory effort by Peugeot!

I was there with David Donner in the time attack class.

It will be a while, me think, for that astounding record to be beaten. First you will need an extraordinary car to beat that Peugeot, that not only had all the power and torque in the world, but that would ridicule most current Formula One cars. Maybe an Audi R18 LMP1 car or a specially-prepped Porsche 918... and then you would need to find a driver of the caliber of Sebastien Loeb. The ONLY other I can think of who would qualify would be his arch-rival, Sebastien Ogier.

Dumas went off the road :sarcastic_hand:

Isn't the course different ... more pavement or something due to the tree (rock) huggers?

is there something funny about Romain Dumas, one of the world's best drivers, trying very hard at it, to get off the road for an unknown reason such as the possibility that the car from  a competitor ahead of him on the road may have greased the track with leaking fluids?

Actually, I have just found out that he did not crash at all, the car failed him:

It was mentioned in post 3, 4 and 5.

Well with "no dirt" ---it's not Pikes Peak anymore!!  Asphalt is not the same challenge as getting a car to work on both!! :)

Questions -
Does an on-board correct the A/F ratio... I would think yes... it is computer-ed... no? Traction 'control'?
Does Stand21 sponsor anyone?

The engine has a Marelli processor similar to that used on the V12 Ferrari engines. It adjusts air/fuel ratio automatically. No need to touch anything.

Does Stand21 sponsor anyone?

Only me!  :laugh2:

Stand 21 is a business, not a charity. It is in the business of saving racing drivers from themselves. The believers love the product, the non believers cook in their garments and appear to be OK with it as long as they "get a deal" or as in big-time racing, are imposed the "free stuff" because the PR guys do the negotiations with companies looking for promoting other stuff they make.
So it is a profitable company, the only one actually showing a profit in that business, worldwide. The others are either giants in the public clothing business like Puma, or have other activities in other sectors (motorcycle clothing) like Alpinestars, or are losing their shirt and have been sold already 3 times in the past 10 years like Sparco, OMP or Sabelt, or are losing money and are desperately looking for a buyer to bail them out like Simpson or Impact.

What does this guy normally drive?

Sebastien? He drives a 110 HP Citroen DS3, that looks a bit like a VW Golf. SEE HERE...

Oh I hear ya on the not too fast , that was just the official reason, Just love those cars and many people want them back.

Having said that watching an on board video of Michele Mouton the French lady rally driver rallying during her time in Group B rallying they did seem too fast as the level of concentration , sweat and "on it" exersion makes the modern F1 and other formulas look like a walk in the park.

Bob,

Sebastien is the most successful rally driver to date. He started around 1998, then was picked by the Peugeot "junior" team after success in regional rallies, then was promoted to the WRC team in 2003. He missed being world champ that year by a few points and that is the last time he lost one, winning the next NINE championship in absolutely crushing manner. His number of wins is now more than TWICE that of the second most successful driver. It will be tough to beat such records, but a new French driver, Sebastien Ogier, could theoretically do it as he is currently cleaning everyone's clock in the new VW rally car.

Who is wearing Stand21 gear? F1 FC/TF guys? :unknw:

Sometimes you (they) have to give out a few decals and a suit to try on.

no decals, there are none!  :) Our clients are the Porsche factory racing team (just won at Le Mans for the xxxx time), most top-fuel and funny-car drag racing stars (Stand 21 was top-fuel champ in 2011 with Al Anabi Racing), top-notch Bonneville record setters many GT and LMP drivers, open-wheel, plus off-road and club racers. About 25000 suits are currently manufactured every year, none for free. The Cadillac and Corvette racing teams are outfitted by Stand 21 and have been for many, many years. When Peugeot and Bentley won at Le Mans, it was with Stand 21 racing suits as none other was adequate enough to sustain the high cockpit temps endured by the drivers.

While drivers equipped with Stand 21 safety gear won 10 F1 titles and 5 Indy 500 in the past, drivers in those disciplines no longer have a choice to wear what they truly would prefer to wear, and Stand 21 is not interested in giving its product and big fat check to the teams employing these drivers. The drivers below had their teams PAY for the suits, gloves etc. when both F1 and Indy car racing had not yet become the marketing whorehouse it has become today:

senna_mansell_prost_piquet_800.jpg

So we don't care, today our customers are coming to see us with their checkbook, we don't go see them.
Stand 21 is also the largest manufacturer of HANS devices in the world and has engineered and now produces extremely advanced devices that unfortunately for American customers, are not available in the USA because of the licensing agreement with the patent holder HDI, now owned by Simpson Race Products. When you saw Nico Rosberg win the British GP last week, he was wearing one of those new ultra-light devices, as well as his co-driver Lewis Hamilton. By the next GP, the Ferrari, McLaren and Force India will get theirs as they are now scrambling to get on the front of the line. Each is custom fitted to the precise needs of each driver and each mold costs the teams 50K Euros. Safety does not come cheap.

But not one of the current F1 drivers wears the same kind of suit I wear because of the teams policies of getting "free stuff" and money from equipment suppliers. I feel sorry for them, because when it is hot as it was 2 weeks ago at Fontana (95 degree in the shade), my suit was far more comfortable than if I had just worn a standard cotton T-shirt, since those T-shirts are made of non breathable fabric. Hence, I was the coolest guy there ... :laugh2:

1.jpg

15.jpg

Today, many drivers, especially less athletic and older, die in their cars or shortly after existing them, from heart attacks due to a phenomenon called "Heat Stress", that has been identified and medically recognized by the best motor racing doctors. Heat stress in racing cars is caused by the rising temperature in cockpits while racing, and by inadequate breathe-ability of the material composing their fire protective garments. Stand 21 SEVEN layers drag-racing suits, rated by SFI as the safest they have ever tested, breathe so well that one can blow air right through the layers and if truly feels like there is no barrier at all. Why this is important? because of perspiration evacuation. When you drive those cars, you sweat a lot: one liter per hour is normal. Once the sweat has been wicked by the flame retardant underwear, if that underwear or the suit above it cannot evacuate the sweat by evaporation, you are set for trouble, and this is why year after year, over 150 racers die in racing cars all over the world from ailments related to heat stress.

Stand 21 engineered a truly breathable and fire retardant fabric in 1989, and the first drivers to use it were Ayrton Senna, Alain Prost and Emerson Fittipaldi, who won the "500" that year wearing one. it was  a revelation to all. Today, an evolution of this fabric is seen on the suit I wear, see above. it is literally a miracle.

When Sebastien Loeb won his first world championship with Citroen, he was equipped by Stand 21 because he insisted on it. Then Puma showed up with a big fat check and Loeb no longer had a say in it.
