After reading my comments regarding the Mexico Arco race in the Bob Rule thread, Bob Emott emailed me with the following comments, which I reprint here with his permisson:

While I don't remember who won the race, I do know that Chris Vitucci was there.

He and I were invited to go, all expenses paid, by some guy that I had built a car for... But the Arco was on the weekend just after I had broken my knee in an auto accident and I was in a local hospital not able to walk.

Chris did tell me that one of the entries was the son of the president of Mexico, and that he had a number of bodyguards to watch over him at the race. If he crashed his car and the marshals took too long to put his car on or yelled at him for his driving habits, they got a very dirty look from his bodyguards... LOL... Handy to have along...

After the race, Chris gave him the race car I had built for him to race. We were both invited to return to visit as guests of the president, but Chris was afraid to take him up on the invitation in case the car was not performing up to snuff...

As an aside, while I was in the hospital recovering, I received so many get-well cards and telegrams, and attempts to call me from all over the world, that the hospital staff finally asked me who the heck I was to get this much attention... Bob Rule had announced at the race, and at a race here in the US the next weekend, that I had been badly hurt in the car accident and suggested that folks send me a card or give me a call... I still have all the cards in a box in my dresser, as I had planned to send thank you notes to everyone... I'm a little late, I guess...

Bob is going to contact Chris Vitucci for his memories of this event and perhaps Bob Rule will have some photos when we get together in two weeks so a better picture of this almost-unknown race can be drawn.

Gator Bob,

Please excuse the drift from an interesting thread but what is the #72 car in your little picture? Looks similiar to the Sportsman and National Sportsman cars of the '70s.

Now back to Mexico!

Here's an edited version of Chris Vitucci's reply to Bob Emott:

I just got home and read your email.

I wish I could remember more than you but I'll have to think about it. I do remember being there and racing with the young man who turned out to be the president's son. He wasn't very good even after giving him your car and trying to teach him how to drive it. He only did well going straight but always forgot to brake at the end of the straightaway.

I wish I could tell you for sure that I won (I do think I did ) and will give it more thought. I do remember having a great time before and after the race but I still don't know why the kid's bodyguards keep giving me a tall glass of WATER after the kid didn't win.

While not having quite as a high a level of name recognition as some of the other pro racers of the '60s, Chris was indeed one of the top slot car racers of that era. He's still a car guy and now leases high-end exotic cars like Lamborghinis, Bentleys, Porsches, and BMWs HERE in Great Neck, NY, on Long Island.
