I think it was an ex Grumpy/Larry Lombardo car but this racer that was first in the 8s (NHRA legal) with a big block built his own motors ...

Good hint ..and still builds big blocks today.

All in- all done? ... I'll say the name.

Pat Musi with a Monza ?

At that time frame Musi was lucky to get in the show in a national event. He did get much better in later years. still a builder too. So Excellent guess .

IIRC the Monza never ran a Big block due to the NHRA weight breaks. Maybe in IHRA (?) and in match race trim.

The first big block Chevy in the 8s was a Camaro.

That Taxi - was an easy one.

OK ... IHRA Pro/Stock 1980's

Rule was 700 cubic inch limit.

Who went to the finals (at a televised) national event against Glidden's cheated T-Bird with less than 299 cubic inches? :shok:

That would be Buddy Ingersol with the turbo Buick, right? He did admit later on after they banned the turbo, he had way more left. You just cannot mix naturally aspirated with turbos/supercharged engines...

Rick,

Where was the Petty Cook Ebert car based ? There was a ton of Gassers out of Ohio back in the day. Any relation to NGR ?

Don't ever forget 'Ohio' George Montomery, the terror of the gassers who also had a hand in the Buddy Ingersol car.

Late 60's early 70's you had a plethora of old Willy's, Fords, Chevy's running AA/GS. We called them the "Gassers". They put on some of the best shows of racing at the time. My two favorite classes to watch during that period were the AF/X and AA/GS. In AA/GS you had Stone-Woods & Cook,
Big "John" Mazmanian,Kohler Bros.,and many, many more. I liked the older bodies that were used, but some of the guys who built up mid 50's style Chevies had some very pretty cars. There were even a couple of good running Ford Vickies and Henry J's out there.

Used to love when then came to Palm Beach International Dragway for the big southern events. They really put on a great show under the lights, and some of the prettiest old cars you ever saw. Big John Mazmanian's car just dazzled with Chrome, and was super fast to boot.

Those were the golden years of drag racing.

Great memories MR.

How about the Malco Gasser  :clapping: I think I could build that model better this time around   ... I wonder if that model kit still out there?

There was a huge opportunity in the mid 70s to run an ex-Pro/Stock car in AA/GS and kill'em in Comp because the index was still based on Olds reared / Drop axle type cars. Don Carlton went to B/A and did well but one of those de-stroked dual plugged Hemi's with a blower could have cleaned up.

OK .. In Pro/Stock ... Who was the first builder to run coil-over shocks (MacPherson struts) in the front?  :umnik2:

A bit different, but, the AA/FA, like "Wild Willy Borsch", Ohh, I liked! The Pisano Bros. had one just before they went to funny cars; which I helped on a little bit. Mid,late 60's, early 70's were a lot of fun in drag racing.

Rick,

Where was the Petty Cook Ebert car based ? There was a ton of Gassers out of Ohio back in the day. Any relation to NGR ?

Don't ever forget 'Ohio' George Montomery, the terror of the gassers who also had a hand in the Buddy Ingersol car.

Bob K.

Sorry for this drift Bob. Bob K, Petty lived a few houses away from me in Eastlake. No relation to Dan Ebert that I am aware of. There was also a guy in Eastlake that had a AA/FD, Tyson was the name, he had a gas station on Vine Street. I used to race at Thompson but don't ever remember seeing the Petty gasser there.

Bob, they had a Willys in AA/FA for a bit. Then the FC bug got  a bunch of folks. And you are right; The Pisano Bros. AA/FC  was FAST and Quick! We [well, they!!] done good! It was fun.
