I wonder when the light bulb first came on when someone figured out that a heavier car would handle better, or at least handle the power better? Or was it a gradual unconscious process, adding another rail here, another rail there, and one day it just became heavy enough?

Richard,

 

I believe it was a gradual process, as the motors became more powerful, the chassis were made heavier to maintain traction, with the added bonus that as you add rails tio the chassis, the center of gravity gets closer to the track.

 

The particular chassis is interesting to me because the body mounts are only ONE small advancement away from being "Sloppy Sam floppies" ala Wessels October 1967 Car Model winner.  All you would need to do is add hinges and stops where the body mounts are soldered to the center section...
