Scott Bader sold this motor on eBay this weekend. Is this a Ram 222 or is it in the wrong box?
If this isn't a Ram 222, what does a Ram 222 look like?

Doug,
Scott Bader has nothing to do with this auction.

Why is the email address shop@tsrfcars.com for slotemporium on ebay if it isn't Scott?
Anyway, answer my question: What does a Ram 222 look like? That was the purpose of the post to begin with.
Is the above a Ram 222? You never indicated one way or the other.

Without having it in my little hands, I wouldn't know for sure, but it appears to be a Ram 857 or 850, the same size as a Pittman DC85.

If the comm tabs are welded it's a Ram 850 or 857, soldered are the Pittman 85.
The 222 is a smaller motor advertised for either 1/24th or 1/32nd use.
The big block motors were popular drag motors, especially the Rams that could stand the 36 volts.

The one I have like that in post #9 the comm has no actual tabs the wire is 'spot' welded to (into) the segment.
Also mine has black w/red stripe lead wires.
How do you tell a 850 from an 857?

The motor in your picture in post #9 is a Ram 222. The brass things that came in your box bolt to the motor, then you add bushings/bearings and the rear axle goes through it, with a spur gear. Pinion goes on the armature.

Mike,
Thank you very much for the info!!!
Unfortunately post #1 was one auction and post #9 was another auction, so the brass pieces that should have gone with this motor went with the Pitt DC-85.
Does anyone have any brass pieces like the ones in post #1 to spare? Please PM me. Thanks.

So it's settled ... it's a RAM-222 in post #9?
Don/others please jump in !
Mikey, do you have a NOS/NIB Ram-222 to provide evidence.

Anyone have any of the brass pieces to spare? Heck, I'll take one and clone it for the other side.
Steve Okeefe, have you accumulated much info on Ram motors for your ISB?
Mike, many thanks for the pic!

Doug,
I'll take a look in my boxes... not sure I have that, but I sure do have a lot of brass! The DC222 is a pretty hefty motor, not really made for 1/32 cars unless you have a shoehorn... Ram also made the DC283, a cute little sidewinder, also with the brass plates, specially for 1/32 cars. The Tyco sidewinder could also fit 1/32 or 1/24 scale cars...
Back to the laminated pole models, here's the first generation Pittman DC85A and Ram DC850, and a Strombecker "clone":
The next generation Pittman DC84-6 and Ram DC857. As pointed out above, the most obvious difference is the much thinner lams. Ram also used a 7-pole arm, as it did on the DC222....

Wow, Don, great info and pics. Many thanks!
Yeah, the 222 does look quite hefty.

I'm still not 100% clear .... Is the motor posted in #9 and #15 a Ram DC-222?
Don S, thanks for the pics and they do help a lot but I don't see the motor shown in posts 9 and 15.

Bob,
Yes, the motor in pics 9 & 15 is a DC222 by Ram. - it's not strictly speaking an integrally-geared motor, so it wasn't in the photo (and I'm not sure I had one at the time!).

Thanks, now I can put it in a labeled bag and get one thing off my desk ....

Ok, I learned two things out of this post.
First, my "Brass Wars" box sure has a lot of stuff in it! *
Second, the DC222 inspired some of the strangest chassis around! I've picked up a few of these chassis and cars in the last dozen years on ebay, and just about every one has something peculiar about it! Have to conclude that the "222" inspired people!
For example:
So, Doug, a pair of genuine DC222 axle brackets will be winging your way tomorrow, courtesy of La Poste and the USPS! Of course, now we'll never now how the 222 would have performed in a Russkit chassis - or in an embalmed chassis!

Embalmed chassis?! Wow that's a work of art...
