Famous Carz
Below is Rodneys account of the project:
This is an amazing scratch built Chaparral 2J body made out of sheet styrene! George owned the scratch built curbside model for many years. George intended to convert it to a slot car using an AMT brass chassis but never got around to converting it.
I purchased the Chaparral from George and converted it to a slot car:
I powered the fans with tiny motors that are intended for model airplanes. The two motors are powered with a single N size battery. Battery and holder are behind the front axle.
Below the tiny fans are spinning like crazy!
A Plafit chassis is used along with a Falcon 7 motor and Scaleauto gears.
Wheels are Cox magnesium wheels converted to set screw fastening (old Bob Ward wheels).
Monogram driver figure:
Hope everyone likes this one as much as George and I do.
I sure like it Rodney!

Very Cool!
Nice job on the 'Snowmobile' motors.
BTW ... Where are ... or what is the source of the fan blades and shrouding?

Great looking car and the body is very nicely done.

That looks VERY cool!! Nice job building the body out of sheets of styrene--and the "snowmobile" powered fans are great!

Here's the scoop from Rodney on the fan system:
Rick,Regarding the Chaparral, the fans are made from resin model jet engine parts. Enclosed is a picture of simular parts. The fan shroud is totally scratch built out of styrene.RodneyPretty cool!
Rick, Thanks for getting the scoop!!!
That IS way Cool. Could this be the path to a Jet Funny Car ... ? lol ?
If the back of the fans are sanded carefully they would 'open up' the blades to be functional.

Long time back I had thought of something like this when Tom Andersen had the vaccuum body. I could never figure out how to make the fans or where to get a small enough motor. I assume there actually is no vacuum suction to the track surface, eh? Your friend (and you) do some really creative stuff!

Rodney sent me some more pictures of his 2J's. Here's what he had to say and show us:
Couple of Chaparral pictures to post.
The styrene Chaparal is the third 2J I have built. Action shot at Eddie's:
Enclosed is a picture of the second 2J and the third 2J.
The second 2J has a lexan vac body. The fans are cut out and do push some air.
I will dig up the first ground effects car and send pictures one day. Dates back to 1969.
Cool cars. Thanks Rodney!
