Retro "twin screw" truck racing anyone?
Ya gotta love that drive train.

Pretty awesome... if it were not for the vintage Champion C-can motor being used as a power plant.
Why?
I'll trade anything for its careful transfer to my studio!

Geez, double reduction gearing (!) What is the overall ratio... like 10:1 ??
Posted 22 September 2013 - 09:06 AM
That's an anglewinder of a different feather!!
Slick build!

To Dave Fiedler, you mentioning that seeing my old slot cars made you feel better made my day, and it wasn't your driving that lunched the gears as an earlier truck driver in training was nailing it off the line full on, I'll rebuild the final drive and and try to make it MikeProof. Hope next time next time you can dine with us.
To Howie Ursaner, an unexpected pleasure meeting you and seeing your smooth and precise first time driving of a high CG truck with four rear non-drifting silicone coated tires was impressive. I'll try to get a picture up of the late '60's 1/25 Italian slotless car set that came from Nat Polk's warehouse. See you at the Mike Swiss "Sano 7" Oct. 4, 5, and 6.
To Dave Crevie, a gearhead for all seasons, great talking with you on subjects ranging from Cannondale motorcycles, Nikola Tesla, tailless helicopters, and live steam tractors, I'll try to bring by that 1940 Lionel train engine that was converted to a gas engine from electric, talk about a "rail racer".
To Mike "Just Ten More Laps" Swiss, as always the gracious host of the most friendly track in Downers Grove, will do my best to beef up the gears on my toy truck to give you a shot at Howie's 11.79. Want to see you drive on the ragged edge and beyond cause solder is cheap and what else am I going to do with all these 1960s slot car gears?
To Inquiring Minds, Jarius "if it were not for the vintage Champion "C" can motor being used as a power plant. Why?" Having built it in 1980, the C-can was not vintage, just a motor of the time, also I have always been guilty of over-motoring my styrene-bodied toy cars.
James Wendel, "What is the overall ratio... like 10:1 ?" gears 12/36, final gears 14/48, 12/36 x 14/48 = 168/1728, giving 1 to 10.285. Good estimate, James.
Thanks for all the comments, you've inspired me to buy an AMT Autocar tractor kit this evening on eBay to replace all the bits lost at tracks over the years, now I just have to find where I left the trailer.

Trailer!?!?!
Posted 22 September 2013 - 09:40 PM
NO! No! Don't do it! Leave it the way it is, it has a certain patina about it.
Maybe use the new kit to build another copy of the original.

Is this the next proxy kit event, vintage semi trucks with anglewinder Muras ?
Paul Wolcott

Yeah, the sidewinder gear set-up Mark went to, is definitely the ticket to transfer power to the rear set of wheels.
The truck is blistering fast down the straightaway.
I bet I could squeeze a 9.98 out of it.
Maybe with some weight added down low, it would get into the 8's.

when i drove that truck i never punched it because i knew the gears would blow.I just feathered it and was gentle. I am sure there is a lot more left if i wanted to abuse it and didn't care.

It's totally different now.
Your 11.79 is more impressive than my 9.99.
