After letting all the excitement of Sano 7 kind of settle down a bit I thought I would share my experience at this year's event. I may get a bit long winded so please bear with me!

I returned to slot cars after 20 years in karting and eleven in SCCA racing sport racers and Formula Vees in 2009. This was my fifth Sano event and I have to say it was the best one for me yet, and not because I was lucky enough to do well. It had a good feeling for me the minute I walked in the door Thursday morning. After making two A Mains on the Flat track last year, my goal was to make ONE A Main on the King this year. I ended up making four!

Friday I was fortunate enough to bag the win in GTC-FK after a great race with David Krumnow and Guillermo Suar. I was pretty nervous going into the last heat but Kevin VanPelt and Ralph Thorne kept me calm and focused all the way to the end. Thanks, guys!  :good: I did not really want to run the GTC-PD class but Noose and Swiss shamed me into it so I thought want the heck just do the best you can and have some fun! Ended up second to Noose in the B Main and moved up to A! Unbelievable to say the least.

Decided to stick with the FK classes and qualified into the A in F1-FK and finished third to Tracy Chin and David Krumnow in another great race. Sunday the dream continued in Can-Am-FK. Was the last one to qualify and ended up bumping Eric Balicki out of the A Main by just a whisker! The race was terrific and I had a shot at another podium. I was on black for the 8th heat and Guillermo was on orange 1.5 laps behind. Figured it was just a matter of time until he came by but I held him off until about 25 seconds to go when I dumped it on the lead on and that was that! Still happy to have had a chance though.

All in all a fantastic weekend. This ranks right at the top of all the big moments I have had over the years in 1:1 racing. I have to thank KVP, Lee Verdich, Manta Ray, Ralph Thorne, and Noose for all the help and encouragement. Met some new friends and saw some old ones to really make it a special weekend.

Racing with Tracy Chin was really something. Quiet and unassuming off the track but on, watch out! Great guy and an honor to race with him as well as all the other great racers.

Have to give a special shout-out to Mike and Jackie Swiss. Great job as always. Mike took a pretty big risk and got some heat for introducing F1-FK and Can-Am-FK classes. By all accounts it was a home run. Motors ran great, racing was super close, and everyone had a great time racing them.

I was very touched to get all the congratulations in person, Slotblog, and Facebook, even from people I do not even know. Probably the most special was from my mentor in Formula Vee. He's kind of like Swiss, doesn't hand out kudos lightly. He sent me a message on Facebook that really meant a lot to me. Thanks, Bob

Lastly, have to thank my wonderful wife Carole for putting up with this racing illness I have for all these years, you're the best, honey!

Well-written, Bernie. You and all of the other racers deserved the success you had. You only get what you put in. You worked hard on your program this year. The results speak for themselves...

Congratulations,

Ray

Well-said, Bernie. Very well-said.

And Manta Ray, I agree with you, too.

Bernie,

It's always great to see nice guys have success on the racetrack. Congrats from me, as well.

Your comparisons between slots and 1:1 racing are exactly the point we need to keep hammering on. If we can get the message out that slot car racing delivers 85-90% of the same satisfying and adrenaline-fueled experience that racers get from 1:1 racing, at far, far less cost and personal peril, it almost has to work to attract more participants to this great hobby.
