From The (St. Maarten) Daily Herald, October 29, 2013:

Model car racing

model.jpg

McKinzy de Windt won the five race series at St. Maarten Speedway on the Great Bay Promenade. Malcolm Arrindell (l) was second and Frank Delamore placed third in the series that began back in September 20. A total of five racers competed in the model car, once a week heats, where the electric motor units can approach speeds near 100 MPH. De Windt dominated the series taking the checked flag in all five races. Arrindell had three second place finishes and Delamore two. Currently the raceway is opened on a limited basis. The track was damaged by a storm in 2011. Race director Reggie Coram was only able to salvage and repair a small part of the 128-foot long five lane wide track. The speedway is working toward totally rebuilding the track to international specifications and plans to host the World Model Championships on St. Maarten in 2014. The next local race day is set for Friday starting at 5 PM.

Thought I would share this article from the St Maarten Daily Herald.

Racing alive and well on St Maarten! Reggie is currently having a King track built by Gary Gerding which hopefully will be finished by the time I get there in February. Bringing some G12 wing cars just in case! Can't wait.  :D

I used to have a timeshare on St. Maarten. Who knew? Probably spent too much time at Orient Beach. LOL.

I have been going there for twelve years. Like a second home for me. Great beaches and fantastic food. Reggie's track is literally ON THE BEACH! If you need to cool off a few short steps and you can jump in... :sun_bespectacled:

The '92 Worlds there had to be one of my bestest vacations.

Yes Tom,

We rented a "on the water townhouse" for ten days with Brian and Betsy Lowe... Playing with our 1:1 rental cars with Gary Clevery... Annette and I got pushed up the tallest hill by a Peugeot taxi cab when he "kissed" our bumper and helped the little Subaru up the hill as I had the gas pedal "pinned" to the floor in first gear! ...

Ahhhh, the French side beaches and stores ran by beautiful half neck'id girls... Seeing Andy Wasserman's face turn red after his little adventure on the ...   Eating ribs and drinks on the beach on Ilet Pinel with Brian Lowe and his wife Betsy... Swimming in the moonlight at the hotel on the beach and the "The Little Bird Bar Cafe"... We wore out the blender (6-7 gallons of Rum) making Pina Coladas  in the rental and had to buy them a new one...

Race?..... What race???

One of our best vacations in 28 years!

Hey, Tom, lets get a Worlds Retro race going down there again with all our Retro friends!

Mike,

Is that a current picture of Reggie's place?

After the storm, I pulled his Raceway List entry and need to add him back.

Never forget that first place goes to the racer with the MOST laps, not the racer with the FASTEST lap

The track in the picture is gone. Too damaged to repair. Reggie has a small oval set up so the kids have a place to race. The Gerding King will be a tight fit but Reggie assured me it would fit! Will report in February.

BTW, if you look close in the far corner you will see the tree that goes through the roof :shok: !

How would we go about getting his address if we'd like to donate some old parts we no longer use?

The pics were taken before the storm. I came across the place by accident while walking the beach to get a bucket of beer! Later in the day while walking down the main street I stopped in and chatted for a while with Reggie. Don`t remember what year that was to be honest.

Not totally sure but I think the address is St Maarten Model Raceway, The Boardwalk, Philipsburg St, Maarten N.A., 011-599-526-0377.

The pics are from an OWH post that I saved.

Wow can't believe stumbled on this. Thirty-plus years ago before construction I lived there for a year, cooked at the Panaramic in Point Blanche St Martin, Means View in French it was atop a hill, near where cruise ships would park. It was connected to the Castle Cove Inn. The French chef came back for one year to open David's Country Inn in Hacketstown NJ for me and my brother.

Always wanted to go back. Not sure if resturant survived the storm. When did track open? There were a lot of Mini Coopers I remember.

Did the raceway exist in 2009?
