In the late '90s I raced Wing cars, eventually working my way up to Group 7. Classes at the USRA Nats were Group 7 Pro, Semi-Pro, Geezer, 27, International 15, and Boxstock.
I was out of the hobby for about 20 years, now the classes run at The Nats are very different. What was the timing (and reasoning if possible) for the changes to the current classes? Did Group 7 price and/or technology itself out of existence?

Group 7 is still there, Opens, just as expensive as ever, if not more so as.
No Pro or Am any more, 27 has become 27 Lite with added rule restrictions. Boxstock has changed its rules and Group F has been added as a lower cost beginner class.

Okay, back in the 70s the Nats was Group 7 only - Pro, Semi Pro, Amateur and Novice. I am looking for time frames, and opinions as to why, the changes occurred. I agree that Opens just became too expensive, I am looking for a history lesson of when and how the changes occurred. Maybe Mike Swiss can chime in I think he was around for just about all of this.

Group 7 OMO has the most participants in European wing races, then 27 Lite afaik.
