This 1886 German toy might be the first working toy automobile ever produced. it was made by GC&Co in Germany  and is steam powered. The little car had a small boiler, is powered by spirits, the resulting steam fed into a one-cylinder 2cc engine. No use telling you that few have survived as it would likely run only once before its finish would be burned by the intense heat!

This 18cm long survivor is presently offered in an auction in France. It competes with another German toy made by Lehmann and powered by... sand and gravity as "the first"!

Looks like it needs a little more weight in the nose and treated tires. :laugh2:

hey doc and sam,

Noose would NOT let it through tech......two body pins were not be pulled to check size of a IRRA approved motor and someone posted $75 motor protest fee.......could not find a legal seal so Philippe will need to check it and report back how he handled the illegal mods to the motor and the drive mech is less than inline! The approved tire cleaner could contribute to the demise of the model car and that wheel type guide is not in the spirit of Retro Easttm competition in that is not available from local distributors. Since it does not pass tech it cannot compete for concourse. ......Banned for life from future events! The first 100 years may have been the easiest.

P.S. Unapproved drivers helmet, no HANS device, no extinguisher, and a missing steering wheel contribute to the unrealistic interior.

Philippe,

Well, at least the front and rear wheels (sort of) match...

Nevermind those restrictive retro-racing rules, that car would be welcome in our R&C revisited events!

We would have to set up a new sub-class for steam powered vehicles (three and four wheel), and your entry could compete against this guy:
