I can see dozens more of Cox "Dan Gurney" repros before long! This is and has always been a true classic kit...

The big disappointment here is the lack of 4 Nascar tires. To build Fred's ride, you have to use the 4 street tires, turn the whitewalls toward the inside and paint out the stripes, or rob racing tires out of another kit. It doesn't make a whole lot of sense.
The 2 "race" tires included in the kit are drag slicks, not roundy round tires.
Okay, what tires would you put on this car if you were making it the #28 version for the shelf?
Don't forget, the popular Cox Gurney car is a '66. This one is a '65. Gurney also raced a '65 but it was solid candy apple red (sort of), not red-n-white like the '66 was. And yes, Gurney won the '65 race also.

It would appear that to make a truly correct "scale" 1965 Ford Galaxie NASCAR racer, the modeler has to add a lot more to this kit than just the tires. Few 3-in-1 kits of this vintage built much more than a semi facsimile of a proper NASCAR racer. IIRC, it wasn't until the late 1960's-early 1970's that there was a "reasonably close" NASCAR kit available, and that kit was only build able as the NASCAR version.
Plastic Performance Products offers a great selection of "stock car" wheels and tires at a reasonable price that should help anyone wishing to build this kit as a NASCAR racer.
They also have the Holman-Moody Style wheels that would be appropriate for this build. Model Roundup carries the PPP line.
I am betting that Round 2 wanted to appeal to as wide an audience as possible with minimum tooling restoration costs. Having done this meant some compromises in the kit- but it is certainly better than not having it available at "popular" prices.
BTW= The Modelhaus has 1966 Ford Galaxie F/R bumpers, grille and taillight parts available. This should help those aiming to convert the 1965 to a 1966.

I'm pretty sure I built this kit originally BITD ... didn't it have a 'tear drop' scoop? (maybe it wasn't an AMT)

I have a fuzzy memory of that also Bob- perhaps it was the 1963 or 1964 Annual?
