Well, another year has gone by, and just for laughs, I sent Exoto an e-mail last week, asking if the 2D that I ordered 12 years ago, is on it's way. As usual, no reply..........

They are by now genuinely afraid that the models would be seized by US Customs for copyright infringement. Mr. Hall's name is good enough in high places, just as Rolex.

They have no need to ever produce the models. They have the money spent and obviously are having no legal problems, even after having these deposits for years.

I'm not involved, but has anyone thought of trying to start a class action lawsuit? If that doesn't work, write your US senator or representative to get their offices involved..

Matt,

They have no problem getting both from endless sources. Model cars probably not being one of them.

That sounds logical, them being seized by US Customs............I wonder if they've produced, then released, the 2Ds in countries other than America.

Exoto has chosen not to answer customer emails, it is clear.  They as a company have no shame, coming from my experiences of speaking to them on the phone.  If you place an order and they happen to have it in stock, maybe you will get your order.  The way that they play with pricing on items is very curious at best.  I truly believe they will never fulfill the Chaparral 2D orders that were placed years ago, just as I was one of the ones who placed an order for a promotion in which you were supposed to receive periodic catalogs, of which I received one of the four I was promised.   Poor customer service couple with poor communication, they receive no more of my money

This is the world we live in today. There was a time when manufacturers loved to see models of their

full size product. It was good marketing. Kids that bought models of Chevrolets could grow up to buy

real Chevies. In this day of corporate greed, they expect to get paid for the right to make a model of

their product. In reality, it is the fault of the consumers. If a manufacturer makes a sub standard

product, it is our right to not purchase it. If they can't sell the product, they will go out of business. The

U.S. is the single largest purchaser of goods in the world. Without us, the companies will not survive.

We only need to realize that. And the "but we need it" argument does not hold water. If there is a need,

someone will make it. If the product is poor quality, and we don't buy it, someone else we make it if he

sees the market for it. We all just have to exercise a little discipline in our spending habits.

The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars, but in us.

I do not believe that Jim Hall was asking a lot out of Exoto.   I may be wrong, but I bet that Chaparral Cars did not demand over the moon royalties.   Exoto lied to all of us who put down deposits, mine was $298.  They then failed to answer emails, phone calls, etc....  One day I will get these bastards, for cheating me.....

I have just found Exoto Chaparral 2D's at a Japanese die-cast car shops specialized in Exoto cars, but they are sold out. Some other Chaparrals seem available.

Last year Exoto lost a lawsuit with Jim Hall, the father of Chaparral race cars, and was ordered to pay him $600,000.00 in unpaid royalties and $1.8 million dollar in exemplary damages. On top of that, Exoto then lost a long time battle with Ferrari SPA in December 2010 and was ordered to pay them royalties to the tune of 1 and half times the profits Exoto made on their Ferrari race cars from day one. That’s a LOT of cash! Can they recover from this? Time will tell. If it was me I would NOT be preordering anything from them right now and for the foreseeable future.

The above article is found at the following model car magazine in March, 2011.

Thanks for that info, Haruki.

"Furious detail" indeed. Apparently Exoto forgot the legal ones.

Every once in a while, I can't help myself, and do a Google search for the Exoto Chaparral 2D...

Today, the model shows up on their website as the "Exoto 2D coupe", and it's no longer a "pre-order" item, but now on the "wish list."

They advertise other models on Facebook but they'll never see any of my money based upon their lack of business ethics.

Has anyone thought about going for a drive to them? Exoto, Inc., 5440 Atlantis Court, Moorpark, California, 93021.

Jeremy,

It is a "ghost" corporation in the USA with no assets. Exoto is a scammy company, often typical of Chinese business practices, basically thieves.

A much better model company is that of the German-Chinese CMC outfit, which not only produces models of a much higher level of precision and accuracy, but of which management is infinitely nicer and open than that of Exoto.

I had a great conversation with Jimmy Zhao, the partner and director in charge of manufacturing, at the Auto Retro show in Monterey last week. A nice man of great reputation and integrity, with a great sense of humor and kindness.

No Chaparrals there, but fabulous other models.

I just searched the Atlantis Court address on the "Google Earth" site. It's a warehouse looking building, in an industrial park.

I was searching for some old paperwork, a couple of weeks ago, and I once again came upon my "pre-order" print out, for the Chaparral 2D that I placed an order for, back in 2004. So, just for grins, I scanned the order, attached it to an e-mail, and sent it off to Exoto, again asking when I can expect delivery of my 2D. As usual, there was no reply. I still receive "70% off sale" e-mails from them....
