Car lovers buy expensive cars: exotic cars such as Ferraris and Lambos are in the $ hundreds of thousands, and there are many of them out there. Muscle cars like Vettes or Mustangs, or collectible classics cost well over $50K and the roads are covered with them. No one seems to question that.
Hobbyists spend thousands of dollars over time for their hobbies. Slot cars are cheap, try R/C cars and aircraft and you will soon match those sums.
True audiophiles buy the best there is, and good equipment can easily cost $50K or more.
As for fine automobiles, there is a huge difference between what you get for $5K and what you get for $50K.
The same goes for speakers: if you are listening to your "Hi-Fi" with 50-dollar speakers, you are listening to noise. Of course if your musical taste is based on the amount of decibels some racket-making group is screaming out of their electrically amplified lungs, it matters little, but if you actually like great music, it does. With $5K speakers you are listening to music. With $50K speakers, you are listening to near-perfect concert-hall sound.
Good speakers are expensive. Sandy's speakers have been the best for quite a few years. Whatever your hobby is, $50K speakers are no greater expense that many other things you would consider "normal" such as a special car.
Thing is, Sandy's new speakers are $3K for the pair, not $50K, and sound just as good.

When it comes to high-end stereo you can easily spend way over $100 grand on the combination of speakers, amps, pre-amps, turntables, and CD players.

I must admit, after cars back then, music was our prime interest so naturally serious stereos were a hot topic.
I recall hanging out with Howie and Sandy at Howie's cousin's (I think) apartment next to Queens College listen to Sandy talk about the guys he met who were into speaker design. Little did we know that would lead to Polk Audio...
When I bought my system a couple years ago I got Definitve Technology (Sandy's second company) speakers and called Sandy during the installation so he could help advise. The people at the stereo store acted like Sandy was a god.

Try it now, Joakim. I didn't realize there was a like limit setting and have now ramped up that limit.
