I have two vintage gas-powered Cox cars but I need help to know they work.

Miguel,

There are three major types of Cox gas-powered cars. Small, medium and large, with engine displacements from 0.020 ci to 0.049 ci.
Most that have been run and left without maintenance, have their engines seized up from the methanol contained in the fuel, that corrodes the cylinder walls and sticks the piston solid.

The first thing to do is to remove the engine, remove the plastic tank, and dip the engine including the reed valve, in MEK or acetone to dissolve the solidified alcohol. Once the parts are clean, the cylinder can slowly be unscrewed from the crankcase, and removed completely in a twisting motion, then cleaned. All parts must be freed from any trace of methanol, and lubricated with synthetic oil, then reassembled.

The metal chassis and screws can be cleaned from solidified methanol with acetone. The plastic parts can be cleaned in mineral spirits that will not affect their material.

Once everything is free and assuming that the glow plug is still good (it can be tested with a battery), it will be ready to go again, but a good piece of advice: don't run it unless you are willing to clean it up soon after! These were "one-time use" toys for most children, as if let sitting for a while, they were useless...

These are the "medium size". They have 0.020ci engines.  :)

The Ford GT should have a .049 actually.  At least I have one here that says so on the box...

 

Not that it matters much, since Philippe is correct about dissassembly and cleaning. So many of those old cars get gummed up totally by sitting with-out cleaning.

Jairus, you are correct, the Ford and the Chevy had 0.049 ci engines and so do the Buick, the Eagle-Ford and the Chaparral 2C.

The Camaro and the Pontiac in the 1/24 scale have the 0.020 ci motors.
