It's easy to understand why the Group B rallying was so popular.

What isn't so easy to understand is why there were so relatively few crashes and spectator injuries...

To me, these guys are the masters of car control. I think Marc Surer's crash was part of the reason they emasculated the cars?

Mainly because of Henri Toivonen, he was burnt in his Lancia at 1986 Tour de Course. See HERE.

Certainly seems that it was his early demise that caused the banning, reading that article.
