OK...........Wednesday the 15th I got some time on the Motherlode with some F-1 cars. Eddies is only open for 3 hours on this day so I had to divide time between finishing up the King track testing and starting to sort out things on the motherlode. Since we haven't raced on this track in some years and never with the current motor format, everything was an unknown. Since I had no real idea of a target, I just took all 6 of my F-1s and picked a lane (blue) and just ran 'em all to see what felt sort of good. Despite the King being really dirty, the ML was in pretty good shape and bite was not bad. I was running with the charger off like we normally do on the King.

With 11 turns in the 140' length the ML is sort of two different tracks. I think of it like this......

The twistys:

  • Looking right from the panel you have a 3 turn ess at the end of the straight.
  • Then the "squiggle" going over the bridge
  • Then the downhill donut....short straight under the bridge, then....90 to a short straight going drivers left....

The finger:

  • After the short straight, you have about a 110 then a really short straight bit.
  • Then a 15* kink right........short straight........
  • A 180 with a slight fallaway.......short straight...........
  • A 15* kink left......short straight..............
  • A 100* leadon to the drivers panel and the main 25' straight.

Naturally, the goal is get the car to work on both sides of the track. Today, I got one car to do that with potential for some others. Here are the four that I'll work with and start to tune. I didn't fine tune much just got an idea of what's what.....sorta

  • All cars ran 8-29
  • All cars ran Parma Matra
  • Ran assorted tires from full width untreated to narrowed treated

This is the 3 rail .047 (with space) running 112 gr. that I have run the last three races. This car gave the fastest time of the day......but!

  • Very fast in the straights
  • Very good in the finger
  • Fast in the twistys but touchy (had to hit the twisty bits just right)
  • Fastest lap, but not a great average time...not a great race car.
  • Tire was JK 8713 ET (probably needs narrower) and maybe some weight.

Here is the 4 rail .047 brother not fast yet.....but good tuning potential. As with the above car, both were built with pans, bracket, and nose from R-Geo.

  • Moderate in the straights.....moderate motor.
  • Very good in the finger
  • Good in the twistys but still a little grippy
  • Ran JK 8783-T and some lead for......121 gr.
  • Needs tire tuning/motor testing

This is an R-Geo tuning fork. Not the fastest of the day but the best over the whole track.

  • Very modest speed in straights probably could use more motor
  • Really snakey in the twistys and forgiving.
  • Good in the finger
  • Ran JK 8713 untreated and weight of only 108 gr.

Wild card: Brand new car yesterday, all 1/16" brass, no rails 115 gr. Shown stripped b/c I totally re-built it today.

  • Yesterday-Car was similar but the axle support was riding on the pans.
  • Pans were sprung from center section on .032 wire.
  • This was by far the best in the twisty bits. Absolutely planted.
  • However....out of the twistys, the nose would lift straight out on turn exit in every turn in the dogleg.
  • Tried nose weight, different tires, guide height, guide angle......nothing worked.
  • But.......it was so good in the twistys that.....
  • Today I rebuilt it with the axle support on the center section and conventional pans.
  • If this ^^^^ improved it, I'll tune it.........if not, I'll shelve it so I can work on the others.

I hope to get in another session with these and expect that the 3-rail is probably just too bitey. The 4 rail and the Tuning Fork showed the best potential. The wild car car may be great or a total bust....we'll see.

So which direction would you go in gears, 7/27 or 8/28 ?

I'm hoping to get to Eddies today if I don't get derailed at work. If I do get there, I'll run all these with the 8-29 that's on 'em and sort out the best one (or two at most) as they are. Then I'll tune tires and take the last one standing and run with the 8-29 that's on it, then switch to 7-27 and see what's what. If the 8-29 feels better, I may try an 8-28 or 8-27. Despite having 11 turns in it, I really don't care for a ton of brakes at Eddies but that's just me. I think tires are going to be more important than gears.

I hadn't run this track in years but when I ran it last week it didn't seem as hard as I remembered. I think we used to run Falcons with the charger on but I was testing the MB with the charger off and the Mini Brute is much easier to drive anyway. I think 6.5-6.8 is about where we are going to be for a good car. I didn't get anything under 6.42 last week and don't think I'll get much faster but....????

I know that Wolf will race Can Am and F-1 and Ray V just bought one of my F-1 out of the case @ Eddies so he's on board. I haven't seen Eric J, but I'm pretty sure he's in. I'll have one loaner Pro Coupe for Wolfie. I also want to try the two new Can Ams I've built in the last week but both may be too light for how rough the King track is getting.

Hope I can get there today........I'll post up the results if I do.

OK, got there and back. The flat track was not as good this week as last week so nothing was as fast but got conclusions anyway. Sorted back through all the cars above and eventually came down the the 3 rail and the 4 rail so I tuned those two all the way down to switching motors between the two. Through all of it, the three rail was fastest but the 4 rail was way smoother and easier to drive so I did my final round of tests on that one. I had to run the lane in a lot before I even got below 7.0. Once the lane settled in I started on the last two cars.

>3 rail started as shown above . 8713 ET, 112 gr, 8-29, motor two. = 6.78 inconsistent

  • Quick but twitchy and felt like it had a sudden limit so I narrowed tires. Got better = 6.66
  • Added 5 gr weight on the center pan got better still = 6.60
  • Added 3 gr more, not much change but smoothing out. = 6.57
  • Switched to motor one, 8-29 = 6.62
  • Stayed with motor one, tried 8-27 = 6.72 (slower in esses)
  • Still motor one, tried 7-27  = 6.64

>4 rail started as above. 8783T, 121 gr, motor one, 8-29 = 6.80 too much bite.

  • Went to 8713T, all else the same. A little better, not as tippy in esses. = 6.74
  • Went to Alpha BFH treated and narrowed. Way better. = 6.64.
  • Motor two 8-29, getting good = 6.58
  • Motor two 8-27, easy but sluggish = 6.66
  • Motor two 7-27, felt slower and felt like I had to push it but almost wouldn't come off = 6.61

So................................................

  • Motor 2 was best in both cars
  • 8-29 was best in both cars
  • 7-27 would be easy to race maybe not as fast but easier to drive.
  • Both cars worked best @ ~~ 120 gr.
  • Both cars worked best with treated tires narrowed by 1/16"
  • At this point would choose the 4 rail b/c it was smoother, even though the 3 rail felt quicker, it really wasn't.

The tuning fork car was next best but a little too loose. Eddie is going to spray so I'll hold this in reserve in case it tightens up a lot. If that happens, the tuning fork will probably be the best.
