Planning a vintage 1/24 hardbody race - Saturday, July 19 - Orange City, FL... no fees, hand-out rear tires.

Open to (8) eight racers - two months to build or modify your car... test and tune on the Orange City track prior to race day.

**Hand-out Tires - Dynamic #691 Rears** - Eight sets will be mailed out after the field is set. (approx two weeks?)

82 foot, four-lane roadcourse, private club track.

12v battery powered, no timer, braid flush with track

Vintage tube-type mechanical lap counter - truly a Vintage '60s wooden slot car track

First Place, Second Place, Third Place, and Best Appearing Awards!

Prizes:

NOS Simco Sidewinder chassis kit

NOS Dynamic #691 Rear Tires

NOS Cox TTX-250 motor(s)

We'll dig up a body or two and more goodies for awards I'm sure...

1/24 Vintage Hardbody Class Rules:

1/24 or 1/25 hard plastic model bodies - model year pre-1960

Must use front and rear bumpers if model comes that way

Driver figure encouraged, windows encouraged, not required

1960s Vintage motors - pre-1970 (Mabuchi 16D, 36D, 26D, Kemtron, Pittman, Pactra, Strombecker, Tyco, etc.)

Everything must fit under car when viewed from above

1/16" clearance

Velcro body mounts allowed

1/8 inch 5:40 threaded axles required

Chassis must be pre-1970, or scratchbuilt

Modern guide flags and pick-up braids allowed

All vintage parts must be used unless noted here in the rules

No spikes, razor blades or exploding cars (except motors wound too tight)

Planned for 1twelve racers total. Smash 'em, crash 'em, and have more fun than adults should be allowed. We will run 4 heats, 3 times to determine the 4 heat Main based on total heat laps. Thoughts are 5 minute heats but we are open to sharpen the rules accordingly per suggestions. Track owner will be hospitable helping racers not in heats. I will be racing. We need a race director if that is doable, I'll ask Bob DeWoody if he will honor us as director but he may want to race, too...hot dogs, chips, and drinks provided.

After this Saturday night, I will post more pictures of some hardbody class cars and the track. We will offer any advice we can as to what is working for this class...

Charlie in Orlando.

Any takers?

Here's a couple legal cars...

Copper Bomb has a Dynamic inline with Cox ttx-250 motor geared 9/33.

Blackie is the car to beat so far with a Kemtron chassis and Cox 36D geared 9/34.

Inline is easier, it's tough to tuck those rear tires inside a hardbody (although we have one Simco sidewinder that is faster but wrecks easier).

July 18 is a Friday. I might be interested, but only if I can find someone to make the drive down with me.

I sure like the looks of those cars. I don't have anything that fits the rules or I might mail one in!!

Hi Jeff,

That's a long way to play with toy cars - bring it!

Hi David,

Thanks for the kind words. Both cars began as junkyard bodies and not too difficult to get them running (except those darn fat tires squeezing inside).

We will save a fast house car for anyone who has tech issues - this is in the spirit of having fun playing with toy cars.  We're not real picky on the rules, make sure it is vintage, tuck everything inside, and go for it. The tires even everything out - low cars with pans seem to work best - wound-up motors don't seem to help except they help you crash harder.  Weight is a good thing to get some traction.

I likely will set up a couple video cameras and tape some segments and the main so others here can enjoy, too. Everybody gets their mugshot. My GoPro sitting where all the cars end up in the ditch might be cool with the racers swaying in the background.

Tonight I will take some more pics during test and tune.

Car interiors are not required, but they look good!

My buddies often drive down to Arkansas to race 1/32 cars, so an eight-hour tip to Florida shouldn't be unreasonable.

Now the question is: are you going to require the drivers to use thumb controllers? :)

Any controller.

Sometimes we hook up the battery charger - might be some 'leakage' of AC? Digital controllers like the Prof Motor wireless don't like the track but the Difalco, Koford, Omni, and resistor types are happy.

Jeff, you are very welcome to drive here. With that prospect, there will be a prize donated for the farthest distance travelled! Bring your buddies and take home all the wins!

(Gonna get with gator bob to find out about pit box plates, stay tuned...)

Charlie,

Great idea, good plan... Glad that you found Slotblog, you are "hooked" on this stuff.

Cool back in the day cars, drive 'em slideways like the cops are chasin' ya.

Get your box plaques from Ralph Thorne Racing... his ad is in the rotating banner at the top of the page.

Pics below and a couple videos (the boys need to get some bumpers on their rears to be legal).

I forgot to take pics of the drag strip... soon I'll get some up here. All the lanes are getting colored striping before race day.

Now accepting ideas for plaques - I have graphics artists that work for me...

I'm considering an addition of a proxy add-on component, how should I do this?

Is this a Proxy Race?

Proxy under strong consideration!  Bear in mind if we do proxy roundy round, we will try our best to take great care for cars but will not be responsible for a scratch or two.  The current proxy idea is - 8 cars max.  handout tires, same hardbody vintage rules.  $20 per proxy car entry fee to cover tires and return shipping.  proxy race: drivers will be assigned lanes, 4 heats, one in each lane with each driver.  total laps wins.  First, second, third, and best appearing get pit box badges.  Goodies will be collected for first place proxy race car owner.  (no fees for racers that bring their cars and enter either vintage proxy or vintage race)

It will be a busy day/night to handle but we're game!

Vintage 1/24 Hardbody Race (1st, 2nd, 3rd, B.A. awards)

Vintage 1/24 Hardbody Proxy Race (1st, 2nd, 3rd, B.A. awards)

Vintage 1/24 Drag Strip Open for Test/Tune (fun when not in heats - don't ask to proxy drag us, maybe another time)

How does this sound?
