This is from Model Car Science, November 1966.

The third picture on page 23 describes what colours of sponge tires were already available.

Fas Track was the supplier. Does anyone know if they advertised these new colours, and when?

Hey, Jocke, I'm not real clear on your question.

Do you mean did they advertise them in color on the front and back magazine cover pages?

I think the clever names used in that caption were made up and IIRC not commercial names of any given manufacturer.

Jocke, are you asking about the tire colors available so as to get which colors would of been used for the Rod & Custom races?

Or at least which ones you can choose from that time frame?

For the most part from reading the race reports etc it seems the "Grey" sponge was heavily in favor :good:

Here is a picture of Tiny's brand donuts with catchy names.

These were also sold mounted and trued by Champion (California)... Not the same as Champion of Chamblee.

IIRC... These went from Joe Lupo (lonewolf) to the LASCM.

I read about Pablo's GP entry, and on page 9, the question of what colour tires were available in 1966 was discussed, so when I found this material, I started this topic for us all to post information on what was available in 1966.

I also remember Reading somewhere that the outside of the tires should be painted black, not sure if this applies to the Proxy cars...

Jocke,

Two things: First, I've moved the topic to the Wheels and Tires forum under Vintage Chassis Parts, which is a much more appropriate place. No changes, just moved.

Second, to answer your question, there was nothing in the R&C rules that required the tire sidewalls to be black. Pastel colored (closed cell foam) tires were one of a number of things that were completely new in 1966, so the rules simply didn't address them.

It is no secret that Mike Morrissey despised pastel colored tires, and lost no opportunities to say so. However, in the race reports, I don't see any cars that had their tire sidewalls colored black - so it doesn't apply to Proxy cars.

In 1967, the Car Model rules required both front and rear tire sidewalls to be black, and indicated they could be painted. Nevertheless it is my understanding that most everyone used black felt-tip marker pens (AKA "Magic Marker") instead.

I am very interested in these old racecars, and try to learn as much as i can about them, i am even collecting parts for building a couple of cars, hoping that i can participate in some future Proxy event.

The different coloured rear tires must have had consequences on the concours that was still a vital part of the R&C races...I Think that they were still rewarding the cars that looked like the real deal back then.

PDL has shown us Pictures of old racecars that has the outside of the rear tires "painted" black, not sure if these cars were from 66 though...

My favorites from those days were GRAY foam and the 7/8" OD silicones for 1/32 cars......

Anyone got some for my restorations?   The silicones work real nice on my old Monogram and pitmans.

in 1966 tiny's, U-Go's and Van Cleave's were pretty rare in Arizona, the few guys that got them terrorized others that resorted to cutting tires from flip flop rubber, don't laugh they worked. Cox brought out some grey donuts that responded well to moo a white milky tire dressing by Dynamic I think. When I did get a chance to snag some tiny's I got yellow ones which were really nice. Blue rubber was beginning to take over from gray especially when Associated and Bill Steube Sr. began producing their tires. I used these until I got some Aguirre rims and Bob Green hand selected orange. Of course the Orange tire rage lasted for probably 25 years before Alpha & Sonic came out with Black rubber that would not shred in one heat.
