News flash from IRRA® - July 11, 2014.

The BoD of the IRRA® is pleased to announce the new Can-Am Plus class!

Can-AmPlus.jpg
By 1970 our inline Can-Am cars had become sleeker and faster race cars. This class is a tribute to those evolved race machines. In keeping with the focus on scratchbuilding, this class allows a new level of imagination and innovation as there is NO restriction on the number or style of chassis hinge or even the need for a motor bracket as uprights can now be used. With a smaller front tire requirement and NO minimum rear tire size It will enable you use up tires from the other classes that are too small to meet the specs. A new body list allows those sleeker bodies that we ran in the early '70s. Many other rules that apply to the existing Can-Am class have be eliminated or reduced.

One of the incentives behind this new class was the need to find a proper class for the new, affordable, and fast Pro Slot 4002 FK motor. In recognition of the support Pro Slot has given the IRRA® since its inception that will be the ONLY motor allowed in the Can-Am Plus class.

A few additional key changes:
  • No min weight
  • Modify your gears
  • No cut out front wheel wells for added body longevity
The NEW Can-Am Plus class is coming to a raceway near you!!

Here are the rules:

Attached File  2014_Can-Am_PLUS_Rules-Final.pdf   224.12KB   504 downloads

Attached File  2014_Can-Am_PLUS_Body_List-Final.pdf   274.57KB   342 downloads

Looks good, but I think rule 16D contradicts the no minimum tire diameter rule.

Yeah the words legal diameter can be taken out. If in a move-up and has to pass clearance.

That was a test and you passed it.

Think evolution of inlines if anglewinders and spring steel never happened.

I like the fact of only one motor being allowed. I would love if only one refurber would be allowed. That is of course the manufacture who makes the motor.

For some reason my phone won't open up the download of the rules. So I'm not sure if my refurber thoughts have been addressed in the rules?

It's .047" and you can grind the wire all you want.

I see it as an accompaniment to the RetroPro class at big races at a much lower cost since you can use small tires front and rear and not have the cost of the motors.

This is going to make for some interesting chassis designs. Full plumber, iso-fulcrum, center hinged, steel rail in-lines.

Probably so you can run a "regular" chassis, maybe modified slightly and don't have to have a one-class chassis.

The class remained inline as a vision of what might have happened to Can-Ams if the Anglewinder class never came about. Inlines are also a lot easier to build.

IRRA® already has an anglewinder class that runs once or twice a year; it never has really caught on.

As far as the guys who thought we should of made this an anglewinder class, when ever I see an anglewinder race run,I see low entries and wildly different lap totals, due to attrition, I'm pretty sure, mostly due to blown spurs.

IMO, this class, with just s slightly faster motor, a more bolted body, and more reliable 48P inline gears, will result in closer racing.

Certainly leaves it wide open for some new design ideas :D wonder what the new TonyP Can-Am Plus chassis will look like !

As I read the rules, the slick-7 keyed construction kit IS legal. I already made mine into a center hinge....just need the Parma body... Maybe a flat track race at the SANO?

Rule 3D seems in conflict with the photo in 2F, diaplanes? Interesting class. Now we just need a Trans-Am class to replace or supplement the coupe class.

Steve,

It is not a diaplane in the sense that it only extends 1/8" from the body with no horizontal component. More of a bumper/reinforcement.

After reading and re-reading the chassis rules many times I have a few designs in mind. Unlimited use of ground down wire,no minimum weight,no motor bracket, and more hinges then a 1200 room hotel. This is going to be interesting if it ever gets off the ground.

First check with the Parma website says that the "930+" series of bodies are 1/32 scale. Mirage is 1157B and 917-30 is 1159B. No listing for the M-20...new?

It seems to me that the diameter of the crown gear will greatly constrain how small the rears can be particularly in view of the .047 clearance rule, so that the rears will not be that much smaller than the .790 tires used in F1.

Cheers

IIRC, with .047 and a 26T, you can run .738" dia. tires.

Interesting concept/Interesting responses.

"I have no complaints, only curiosity.  Why did the class stay with inlines?"

"I agree..should have been anglewinders."

There were references to potential "blown gears" in anglewinders which is now missing from this string.  Say what?  These chassis are harder to build?  I think not.

I like the concept of the single motor with no formula to allow other motors.  Frankly I think the IRRA has been more than a little late in embracing this motor.  Not having this as an anglewinder  class is a missed opportunity in my mind. The mindset seems to be like a reimagining of a slot racing reality if it was a world of only inlines....an evolution....of flintlock rifles.

The fact of the matter is that the technology of slot racing did evolve.  It evolved to anglewinders.  A design of chassis that literally decades of racers (ones we should try to be attracting now) was all that they knew.  A couple of years ago a former national champion ran with us in an enduro race and when we dropped him off on the way home he said to give him a call when they were running anglewinders. 'Nuff said.

Myself I'll run the rules that the track owner embraces.  If is this class then so be it, but to me at the end of the day this was a lost opportunity to set this sanctioning body up  with a class of retro slot cars that is set off off from others.

Steve,
It is not a diaplane in the sense that it only extends 1/8" from the body with no horizontal component.

I have to agree with Steve, it sure looks like a diaplane to me.

It would have to use different sized kid wheels.

You could use 2 26T gears.

Id opt for a slightly bigger rear tire so be able to use an assortment of gears.
