THE GP CLASS RESULTS
This event is being dedicated to passing of James Garner and his starring role in the great movie Grand Prix.
A Tech Chart is being prepared by Steve Okeefe for each race report similar to what was done in the original R&C Magazine race reports. This will list all the specs and components used in each car. When it's ready Steve will insert the Tech Chart into this post and make a post to notify everyone.
So here we go with a more than full field of 9 GP Class Racers. All the on track pictures were taken by Rodney Chew. Thanks Rodney!
THE GP CLASS FIELD
QUALIFYING TIME EVENT
Fastest time was set by Pablo with a smoke’n 8.67:
Rodney's comments, "Rocket ship motor! Hooks up the power well. If Mike Steube had entered a car it would look like this one!"
Second place went to Captain Rick’s Ferrari 158 with a 8.78 time:
Rodney's comments, "Not enough traction with the grey VC’s, switched to black tires. After the first few laps, THIS CAR HAD NO BRAKES! Fast qualifier but would not hold up in a race."
3rd place went to Captain Rick’s Lotus 25 with a 9.05 time. Only 2 cars were in the 8 second range:
Rodney's comments, "Perfect balance of handling and power for a lightweight car”
4th place was a tie with Paul English of Team Pittman with a 9.16. That’s a smok’n fast Pittman:
Rodney's comments, "Amazing power! Some tilting but only in right hand turns? Nice driving car though”
4th place tie’s other car was Rodney’s BRM H16 with an identical 9.16:
Rodney's comments, "Sluggish motor but it’s an OK car”
5th place went to Rodney’s “James Garner BRM H16” with a 9.44:
Rodney's comments, "Nice driving. Transitions left to right well. Linear power delivery”
The chassis with its intricate suspension detail was originally built by William Haul and modified by Rodney for scale size tires:
6th place went to another one of Rodney’s entries. This time a Ferrari 3L:
Rodney's comments, "Tails out everywhere but good power and brakes from the period TACO rewound motor”
I’d like to add this car ran scale diameter tires and 1/8” of ground clearance from the stock Dynamic frame. Cool car!
7th place went to Eric with a Pittman 196B powered little Dubro Ferrari 3L with a time of 10.27:
Rodney's comments, "Motor’s mass makes it slow to transition left – right but it’s very smooth and quiet with its bevel gears and ball bearings”
8th place went to Don Siegel’s 1.5L BRM with a time of 10.59:
Rodney's comments, "Sweet old car. Looks like it was lifted right out of the 1966 event. Tires are a little out of round and the rear end could use more bite but a cool car!”
CONCOURS EVENT
I messed up the group shot but here are the winner’s pictures individually. First up is Captain Rick’s Ferrari 158 GP:
2nd is Rodney’s beautifully detailed James Garner BRM 3L:
3rd is Captain Ricks Lotus 25:
PROMOTER'S CHOICE AWARD
For the GP event it was given by Rodney for the car in class that, as he puts it, "I like the look."
The "PROMOTER'S CHOICE AWARD" goes to Don Siegel. Cool car Don:
