Sports Car Class Results

Two of our entrants (and myself) had cars moved to the What If class. First of all your cars did great. In fact they finished in the same positions in the more heavily contested What If Class as they would have in the Sports Car Class.

My car was WAY low on the 1/16" track clearance rule and the other two cars had slot car bodies that didn't appear in the Auto World Catalog until years after the R&C event, 1968 and 1968 1/2.

So be patient, your cars performed great and will be showcased in the next event. :victory:

A Tech Chart is being prepared by Steve Okeefe for each race report similar to what was done in the original R&C Magazine race reports. This will list all the specs and components used in each car. When it's ready Steve will insert the Tech Chart into this post and make a post to notify everyone.

So here we go with the Sports Car Class Races. All the on track pictures were taken by Rodney Chew. Thanks Rodney!

THE SPORTS CAR FIELD:

QUALIFYING TIME EVENT

Fastest time was Captain Rick with his Tyco/Pittman powered   :shok:   Lotus 40 with a 8.23 second lap time:

Rodney's comments, "Very smooth with a nice match of handling and speed"

Second place went to Captain Rick with his Mike Morrissey race 4 winning Lotus 40 "clone" with a 8.29 time:

Rodney's comments: "Switched from grey VC's to modern blacks as the car needed more bite. The car drove completely neutral and fast"

Next up on the podium with a 3rd fastest time was Rodney's McLaren MkII with an 8.88 lap time:

Rodney's comments: "Car works good."    He's a man of few words about his own cars! :laugh2:

4th fastest time was Steve Okeefe's Ferrari 330 with a 9.17 time:

6SteveO3.jpg

Rodney's comments: " Super light weight car. With grey tires, no bite, just fishtailing. Changed to blacks and the car "wheelied" down the straights! Tons of power! Added weight and finally taped the drop arm to lock it in place. Got the car to hook up but it's geared too tall"

5th fastest was Don Siegel with his very period looking McLaren Elva with a time of 9.78:

4donsiegel4.jpg

Rodney's comments: "The car was very loose. Switched to black tires and now too much bite! The car wants to tilt and has to be driven carefully"

CONCOURS EVENT

The first, second and third place Qualifiers finished the concours in the same order with Captain Rick clinching 1st and 2nd and Rodney 3rd:

PROMOTER'S CHOICE AWARD

We also have the "PROMOTER'S CHOICE AWARD". This is an award given by Rodney for the car in class that, as he puts it, "I like the look."

The "PROMOTER'S CHOICE AWARD" goes to Steve Okeefe. Beautiful car Steve. We loved the wheels!!!

So again, thanks to everyone! Next up will be the What If class and we have twice the entries to post..........

Wheelied down the straights???  :shok:  :laugh2:

Sports cars are not supposed to do that...  No more nitrous for you.....

A little too much motor for a lightweight car...  ya think?  :wink3:

Need to put that puppy in a (heavier) 5th or 6th race chassis - but that's for next time.

Great report Rick, and congrats for first and second best lap times! :good:

Hi Dennis,

Yes, Lola T70's were used in the R&C series but you entered a low and wide Lancer Lightweight series #5165 Lola MkIII B CAM/AM. It first appears in the Auto World Catalog issue 1968 1/2. It wouldn't be fair to let a Dynamic Handling Body Lola T70 in with the R&C cars either. The bodies used in the R&C series were much narrower like the Lancer Lola T70 Chevy.

But to ease your concerns, your beautifully built and prepared car handily won the much faster and more highly contested What If Class. Results thread coming soon.

Thanks Keith, looks good.

Hey Rick & Rodney, how did the French motor do? It revved up pretty high on the test bench, but no idea how it would do on the track...

Don, the French motor has great power and lights up the tires with ease. If the tires are glued a bit it will hook up the power but then the car will tilt unexpectedly at the limit.....a common trait of these beasts!
