Okay folks, it's time to do the definitive thread on the late great Larry Shinoda and the entire Detroit slot car scene!

We all know that Larry was a true automotive genius and was inducted into the Corvette Hall of Fame. We also know that Larry was a slot car fanatic like we are!

He produced some of the great thingie bodies of the late 60's era and was significant to the Slot Car Hall of Fame (if there was one?).

I would like to discover everything about his slot car designs and also those of that era in Detroit such as what was produced by his competition at Shores and other tracks in that Detroit area. Maybe we can determine finally "who did what"!

Please comment anything that you might know about this very important topic! Post pictures of your Shinodas and other Detroit thingies. Let resurrect this "thingies" forum and bring it back to life!

Wow, you could hear a pin drop in here. Spiderwebs everwhere... Thingies are NOT just about Proxy racing you know.

Here is another car that is attributed to Larry Shinoda:

The MONGOOSE or is it the WARLOCK?

Is this really a SHINODA?

Gee, I thought that this would be a good thread...!

I now realize that it is a dead issue and we will never know the full extent of Larry Shinoda's work and what the details are about old Detroit and places like Shores Raceway and competitive slot car bodies that were produced! Maybe it will be covered in the up-coming book by PdL. Otherwise....

I give up...

David,

Yes, it is extensively covered. We are taking the book's pictures now, it is the last part before composition and publishing.

Headon 13.jpg

This was the original car I was going to enter in the Lucky 13, but upon perusing the competition, I went with a Choti instead...

1final.jpg

Neither was overly successful, but the choti did win one race.

Gentlemen,

"CHOTI" are from Northern California, not Detroit. These are all very nice, but...

This thread was intended to snuff out bodies and stories that we know little to nothing about from the famous Detroit scene back-in-the-day.

Dave,

Yes that is exactly what we are talking about. You say not pretty but I disagree. It is beautiful for exactly what it is. Upcoming book or not, it's great to share cars from old Detroit!

We know a load more about slot car racing is California North and South back-in-the-day, we just don't know enough about the place where legendary Larry and his competitors battle it out for local supremacy with their own creations!

I sincerely thank you for this.

Bought a replica Shinoda Body last month and mated it up to interesting old chassis I acquired earlier in the year.  Need to work on getting the tires to hook up and resolve why the motor will shut off until I take it off the track for a less than a minute.  I suspect a solder joint but experience from this team would be great.

Dressing an exact listing of Shinoda "Thingies" bodies will not be easy. Besides the 1966 and 1967 pointy things, he began making less radical ones by early 1968 before the hobby totally collapsed. Here is an unused example, unused likely because... the track on which it was to be run closed down!

40033.jpg

40033_1.jpg

The chassis is typical, featuring a Dyna-Rewind motor and guide tongue, White Circle silicone-sponge tires and BuzCo front wheels.

Very interesting body.

The chassis also looks very nice but the front axle seem a bit fragile and the whole chassis seems light.

To my untrained it looks like it is designed to be used with a downforce body to keep it on the track or that the track it was designed for had banked corners.

Thank you for sharing this wonderful piece of history  :good:

Jaak, it is actually pretty strongly built. The construction is typical of what was done in Detroit, with a Dynamic motor mount bolted to a Dyna-Rewinf brass tongue, and a sturdy framework sliding up to a full 1" back and forth inside the nickel plated brass tubes affixed to the motor mount. A much more effective form of "Iso" than the one devised by Cox.

I love that Shinoda "GT" style of body and that innovative "Detroit" style chassis! Gene has told me often about the simple railed style of Motortown that they ran, but he claims that "sliders" are small hamburgers not typical of his era!

Would love to see a better more detailed account of how that chassis worked and why.

Thanks Philippe,

So this is one of those famous Detroit Sliders I have heard about?
Slider due to the framework being able to slide up and down putting pressure on the rear at accelerating and pressure on the guide under breaking...

I remember reading about these before I touched an iron and really got into the mechanics of chassis building.

Nice slider pic indeed, didn't Jairus build something along these chassis lines a few years ago for a proxy???
