Do magnets have to be glued/epoxied into a can to fully benefit from zapping?

Will magnets accompanied by a steel slug fully accept a zappers charge?

Not to my knowledge.  It seems clear that whether they're glued in or not, they will charge to roughly the same levels.  I say "roughly" because I've never kept close enough data from doing this with a single set of magnets in a particular setup...also...I always use JB Weld which has magnetic (steel) dust built into the resin and using that versus a non-magnetic epoxy/glue may change the overall gauss readings a bit.

There has been some back and forth about this, but it does seem to me to be the case that zapping with a close-fitting slug is the way to go.

Thanks for the feedback guys.

Today, for the first time, I zapped 3 sets of magnets outside of their can environment.

As I normally do when zapping magnets in their can, I placed the steel slug between the magnets, placed them in my Megblaster 3 with the South magnet uppermost and blasted them twice.

Unfortunately, the Gauss readings following the zapping in all three cases were lower (sometimes substantially lower) than the Gauss readings prior to their being zapped.

What has happened here?

Did my second zapping reverse or negate the original one?

You need to make some type of fixture to keep everything as centered as possible. Top to bottom and in the middle of the cavity. Some styrofoam should do the trick, and easy to cut and shape.......

I hold everything in place with a piece of red ribbon tape which came with my M3.

The magnets and slug were sitting in the middle of the barrel.

Is it normal for lower readings to be taken after zapping?

NO, what kind of magnets are you doing, put in an old set-up with a slug and try that and see if they come back. You must have an empty can there?.....

Zip you need to check them seated in a can after zapping loose. The can dramatically increases gauss.

...one thing on this Zippity.  A couple of times, I had a poor result zapping magnets that normally would come up to full strength.  Without realizing it, I wasn't holding the "charge" button long enough for the caps to fully charge.  I guess I just got a little casual after a while.  Now, I let the caps charge for a good 20 seconds or so, which is probably solidly more than they need, and always have good results with Rick's MagBlaster.  I'm not sure if the magnets should be immobilized (prevented from moving when you hit the "zap" button by building a fixture to keep them well-centered) or just centered (I use the ribbon too), but the ribbon alone seems to work very well.

I will leave the pocket zapper advice to those that sell and use them.

With a BENCH zapper like a TrikTrax or similar......

The zapper will pull the magnets away from the walls of the can unless they are glued in and shimmed with a slug.  A steel slug will ensure maximum saturation over an aluminum or other non-magnetic slug.  The slug and magnets can be used without a can.

Alnico/padlock motor magnets should be fully assembled motors.

I always wondered why the automotive shop had a zapper for repairing speedometers in the old days...and who made them?

Yikes...even with the magnets held by clips?  Seems unimaginable!

My zapper has two full 12 ga coils of 500 ft wire. It was built to charge RC brushed motors.  And the house lights dim.....

Spring clips CAN slip out and you find out how good your epoxy job really is.

Ah OK...they "can" slip out is different from saying they "will" slip out.  In any case, even more reason I'm glad I have one of the "pocket zappers"!
