A new business in downtown Inman is helping racing enthusiasts fulfill their need for speed.

Upstate Speedway on Mill Street features two slot car race tracks, one of which is 165 feet long. Slot car racing involves miniature cars magnetically attached to specific lanes zooming around a track. Each car is hooked up to either a 6- or 12-volt battery, with 12-volt cars traveling at faster speeds.

Once a car is hooked up to a power source, it's controlled by a remote with a trigger. The harder you squeeze the trigger, the faster the car goes around the track.

Some of the cars at Upstate Speedway can finish a lap around the 165-foot track in about four seconds. The cars move so fast, they can be difficult to follow as they zip around the track.

"I had never seen it before, and I found myself mesmerized," said Mike Cannon, the owner and operator of Upstate Speedway.

Never forget that first place goes to the racer with the MOST laps, not the racer with the FASTEST lap
