Today is a great day. I got an email from Jim Allen who has the website Scratchbuilt.com that has been referred to so often here on Slotblog. I guess he's been hanging out on Facebook and he says people are finding out about him.

Here is his email address:  tjallen@pipeline.com

If you want him to resume the great work he was doing up until 2005, please email him and let him know. I know a number of people here on Slotblog used to enjoy Jim's site in the early 2000s.

Let's all give Jim a big round of support with emails to him, requesting he take up where he left off years ago!

He was promising an article on iso-fulcrum chassis before he stopped adding anything more to his site. I'm hoping to see his article soon

If you are unfamiliar with his work, please go to www.scratchbuilt.com. You will enjoy it and spend a lot of time there.

Jim hasn't updated the site since Feb. 2005, however, there are still tons of useful information and photos on it. I go there often to reread its information. Jim had quite a collection of slot cars too, at one time, but I don't know if he still does.

It's good to hear he still interested in slot cars. :)

Now now, Doug, people can post here, they don't have to fill up my email-box. :)

In the conversation a few people were having on Slot Car Builder Facebook page, I made the point that I'm not sure there is space for scratchbuilt.com in the scratchbuilder's world anymore. Steve Okeefe has done a great job with his Independent Scratchbuilder website, and has covered a lot of the same material I had considered doing back in 2005+. Many of the Golden Age scratchbuilders have resurfaced, posting DVDs and more to convey the ideas they were working on in the mid-'60s. And PdL has written the book on Vintage Slot Cars. So I'm not sure what purpose a new scratchbuilt.com would serve.

But it is true, I am thinking seriously about doing something with scratchbuilt.com, I'm just not sure what, yet.

I'm happy to see you so psyched about it, though.

Jimmy

I think there are many who are psyched up over this, Jimmy, me for a starter.

Yes, please.  :good: Keep scratchbuilt.com going, and it would be great to add more stuff to it.

Steve Okeefe, Jairus, and Pablo (to name a few) have kept us going with their great stuff, and all have a slightly different outlook on building.

The more the better.

I was a mid-pack builder and racer in the '60s, and like most teenagers of the day, got distracted away from slot cars when girls became more attractive.

But I always had a passion for the hobby.

Fast forward 30+ years, I was tooling around on the internet around 2000, when I found this great website about scratchbuilding slot cars, and my interest sparked up again, and I've been playing with slot cars since.

That website was yours. So thank you, Jimmy, for getting me back into slot cars.

:)

Hi Jim,

Glad to see you on here, and count me as another fan of your site. Your enthusiasm was always very catching, even for those of us who already loved the scratchbuilts, and you really put together a great online collection of stuff.

Hope you do more with scratchbuilt.com!

Don

Jim,

I sent you an email before I read the last few posts here in this thread. Count me in as still being interested in reading scratchbuilt.com and welcome to Slotblog. :)

Munter, I still recall your yellow Ferrari and its unique chassis you have on Scratchbuilt.com.

Fast forward... maybe a Scratchbuilder's Wiki with several designated editors a peer review of articles. Now that would really be something and it would take the load off of Jim.

Howdy, Jim.  :)

Visit scratchbuilt quite often. The Phillip Niyazi article on building the Cukras Ferrari is of particular use for a future build (thanks to Pablo for the iink).

I would love to see the article on a step-by-step build of an Iso. I will probably follow along in an effort to copy your build!! I have tried to build one before, it was one of the " hoppiest" things ever on the turns and straights.

Jim,

Even with more sites that have surfaced in recent years, everyone's input is unique and offers a different perspective.

I don't see where you would be "in competition with". I think re-opening your site would be a welcome "in addition to" aspect of the hobby.

Please do the iso article. Besides, I have almost forgotten what that iso frame looks like I did for you.

And yes, welcome to Slotblog, Jim.  :good:

Thanks, Bill. I still have the running chassis but the body broke up around the pin holes. I have another new on card and who knows what may transpire.

I know this is an old post, but I just wanted to ad my nickles worth. Welcome to slotblog.net, Jim.

Scratchbuilt.com is another of the few sites regarding slot cars that I frequent often.

Keep up the great work.

Thanks,

Steve

I've approached Jim about incorporating scratchbuilt.com into Slotblog, much like Steve Okeefe's The Independent Scratchbuilder site has migrated over here.

He wasn't sure he wanted to do that, but I wish he would make that decision. Since he's not been updating the site for a number of years, the info deserves to be preserved and promoted IMO.

The site was last updated Feb. 2005.

I'd like to see the content of this site preserved. Much of it hasn't migrated elsewhere. I first became acquainted with Doug Azary, Steve Okeefe, and others on the scratchbuilt.com site.

I sent Jim Allen an email in 2015 when this thread first started, but he did not respond. I don't think he realizes how much information his site lost when he disconnected his slot car BBS due to spamming. He should have changed it to "read-only." I wouldn't want to see the photos meet the same demise.
