Naming - the way I see the world.

NASCAR is a sanctioning body, slot cars that resemble the 1:1 cars of NASCAR, ARCA, etc., are Stock Cars.

Same goes for:
Drags, does anyone call slot drag racing NHRA, IHRA, UDRA... etc.?
We run Can-Am cars .. not USRRC or FIA Group-7.
The 1/24 skinny cars are not called single seat Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile.

Flame on. :laugh2:

NASCAR has become an accepted term generic term to describe 1:1 race cars that look similar to street cars at a dealership. The term stock car is somewhat misleading because none of those racing organizations mentioned run cars anything like a stock street car.

Examples of other trademarked names used for generic descriptions include, but is not limited to, Kleenex, Lexan, and zipper. If you don't like to call them NASCAR, call them slot cars. :laugh2:  :laugh2:

Well, call them representation of true NASCAR liveries then. I actually prefer to run liveries as close to the real car as possible. I still do some of my own bodies in my generic paint scheme, but with the help of Patto's Place and local painter Eddie Stilley, I run some really nice creations now in NASCAR, primarily Kurt Busch and Jeff Gordon liveries. They run well, too.

I prefer to call them NASCARs as I'm tired of all the political correctness that has overcome the world. :laugh2:

I love those style NASCAR bodies, Mike. Unfortunately no one likes running them other than on ovals.

The newer COT styles just aren't for me.

I would rather call a spade a spade. NASCAR's involvement in franchising decals rather than allowing them to show fan support really made me hostile to the whole money-grubbing business of organized sports.

We are racers too. My cars are my team and I paint them as my team.

We may carry commercial advertising on some of our race cars, but we should be getting paid for it.

Rant off.

Mike, to me... they look more like USAR cars.

I might have to think hard if it's a good thing to let K. Busch drive a loaf of Wonderbread. Won't be good for PB&J sandwiches after that... LOL.

MY cars don't look like TV cars... it's MY canvas until someone puts up some EvilBucks... or product... LOL.

I do TV star cars for friends and family... but, only on request.

I'm not sure that some are getting what is being communicated in post #1.

Time to go back to working on my vintage NHRA cars. My FIA Group 7 cars are parked.

Oh, before I forget... I raced at a NASCAR sanctioned track with a NASCAR license... we called them Street Stocks. Note: They are not stock.

Bob,

I get what you are trying to say in your first post. It's just easier to say NASCAR than to say "We are running stock cars with a NASCAR livery this weekend in the MY Series race in Jacksonville".

In short a generality: if we were going to run cars that truly looked like the race cars, or any race car for that matter, our choice would be limited to running 1/32 hardbodies produced by Scalextric, SCX, Slot. It, and others.

As for Kurt Busch, like him or not, he does have a reputation for getting the most out of the equipment he is given, which is why the 78 car did so well when he drove it, or even the 51 car when he drove that. Other drivers may not like him personally, but they know he can drive a car. Jimmy Johnson hates him, and I like Kurt for that one reason alone. Kurt doesn't bow down to JJ and ain't afraid to race him. Jeff Gordon I like more now that he has matured, and I really started respecting him when he actively sought the AARP sponsorship. He does a lot of work for AARP and the Drive to End Hunger campaign and very actively supports both. His livery and Kurt's, are the only ones I run. Just ask Rollin. I even have two bodies of their newest 2014 cars, both being orange and black in color. I pay dearly for the decals... but I support my drivers.

No flaming here, just friendly diatribe.

Last time we drove them was early '70s... called Stockers. Sort of miss them, and the huge slides when pushing too hard.

That indeed would be nice, but what's paid for advertising anywhere is related to how many eyeballs see the ads. Using that metric, the ad rates that could charged for advertising on slot cars are going to be tiny fractions of a cent.

Bob,

I get your point about the inconsistency of calling this class NASCAR as opposed to Stock Car. But you might as well be baying at the moon in an attempt to get it to go dark for the traction you're going to get for that change.

I recall suggesting to some of the key Retro guys in the UK that terming their Retro racing as "D3 racing" was kind of silly, as the D3 term originally came about from the idea that Retro racing would be within the USRA's purview as "Division 3". But the active Retro racers out west made it very clear that they wanted nothing to do with the USRA and squelched that idea almost as soon as it was floated.

But the D3 label has persisted, both here in the US west and in the UK. Ain't gonna change... which is essentially what I was told by the UK folks.

I believe it was George Carlin who first commented, "Why do we drive on a parkway and park on a driveway?" Same deal... long-term usage sometimes defies all logic.

Greg, not trying to change the world on this one. It's a 'grind my gears' kind of thing and just howling at the moon. It must be a 1:1 hang-up thing.

Eddie, F1, Can-Am are class names, not sanctioning bodies - see post #1. In Retro we call 'em Stock Cars, not NASCAR or even Grand National. The top class in NASCAR is called Cup...

Bill, I get the whole generic 'zipper' thing.

Mike R., those would be Cup cars... No?

Doc, they look like NASCAR cars. Not NAS cars. NASCAR Cup cars.

Pekka, We call 4-1/2 Retro cars Stockers here. If you miss them get tonyp to build you a chassis and Noose to paint you a body, you won't regret it and you will be happy again... forever.

Mike B., Is it that obvious? LOL.

For 'the record' The '72 car above is a NASCAR Street Stock car. The only thing NASCAR sanctioning was bad/good for in the Charger Division Street Stock class was they raised the license fee, back gate fee, a big name, and a much better driver insurance package.

Fresno is racing NASCARs tomorrow. I'll be there with a Camry and a JK Scorpin.

NorCal runs them as part of their circuit track agenda.  Must be good!

Semantics again don't you think Bob.  Some terms and tags stick like nicknames.   Stock cars, NASCARS, we know what they mean.

.  A term\ gets its meaning when its used the most within certain contexts.

Absolutely, It's a personal hang-up, to my ears ... It's like saying I run IRRAs

Another: Since the HO days then the Aurora 1/48th set came out... running two different scales against each other in the basement was just wrong...lol

Technically in Retro we run

NASCAR - Grand National - Stock Cars

From Jayski.com

When did Winston come aboard and what other names has the 'elite' series been known as?

It was called Grand National first from 1950-1970,

Winston [R.J. Reynolds] came aboard in 1971 and it was known as the Winston Grand National Series from 1971 thru 1985.

From 1986 to 2003 the series was known as the Winston Cup Series, after after Winston/RJR opted out of their 5 year deal with 4 years to go, NASCAR signed Nextel for 10 years and the series was known as the Nextel Cup Series, then Sprint bought Nextel and after years of rumor, the Cup series was renamed in 2008 to the Sprint Cup Series. A quick timeline:

1948: Modified Championship [not used in record for Cup]
1949: “Strictly Stock” Championship [considered the first season of 'Cup']
1950-1970 NASCAR called their top division, “Grand National.”
1971-1985 NASCAR Winston Cup Grand National.
NOTE 1972 starts of the “Modern Era”…Races were reduced from 48-60 range to 30 in 1972, races were over 250 miles [except road courses] and no more dirt tracks.
1986-2003 NASCAR Winston Cup. (The Busch Series takes on “Grand National” moniker until 2000, see next FAQ.)
2004-07 NASCAR Nextel Cup
2008-current NASCAR Sprint Cup
So most drivers who raced in the top series, are now considers Sprint Cup champs. drivers, etc

I know, slot racers are the most opinionated people on earth!

Thought I'd show off.   "NASCAR" as it's used in NorCal, has its circuit member tracks.  My entry uses the popular Camry .007 body.  Unique to the franchise is the use of paper interiors.   Fresno track, being the closest to us locals make it a point to show up.  There will be 4 of us from Foster's.  The format features a super-mega round robin with 2 sitouts.  Everyone runs together!  No qualifying. So test your skill in dodging errant missiles and keep it in the slot

:o In Asperger's Disorder, affected individuals usually have a circumscribed area of interest which usually leaves no room for more age appropriate, common interests. :to_become_senile: Some examples are cars, trains, French Literature, door knobs and hinges, cappuccino, meteorology, astronomy or history.

Slot Cars are not on the list. We might have Curmudgeon's Disorder tendencies. ^_^  :laugh2:
