At Jay's request, no service for him will be held.

It should be no surprise to anyone who knew Jay that he instead wanted a memorial slot car race held in his honor and the planning for that is in the works, almost certainly to be held at Mike Iles' SpeedZone Raceway in Mt. Holly, NJ.

As soon as the details are firmed up, the Jay Kisling memorial race info will be posted here at Slotblog.

I met Jay just a few years ago when Mike opened his track. Jay welcomed myself and son into the hobby and was more than helpful with teaching not only myself but my son. We both strayed away from racing as my son grew.

I stopped into SpeedZone a couple weeks ago... haven't been there in a couple, just to say hello to Jay and Mike. Neither were there so I left. Wish I would have asked the staff if Jay was around.

I had no clue that he wasn't doing well until I received Mike's text this morning of Jay's passing. I have met many of men in my 50 years, but only a select few touched me in a way that I will remember them and their stories to my grave. Jay was one of them. We spent many hours chatting about not just racing but life. Wish I could have another one of those conversations.

RIP, brother Jay. And let us all take a moment to be grateful for the blessing in Jay's life - Mike Iles. Mike lost a dear friend today. My condolences to the entire slot family and all that knew and loved Jay.

Rest in peace, Jay.

I met Jay for the first time at the 2012 Checkpoint Cup at Buena Park Raceway.

Since then I had great opportunities to see and race with him at SpeedZone, Retro East, and SCRRA events. He was a very good racer, giving me much good advice to improve my cars but more than that I really enjoyed his company as a good friend full of humor.  He was very nice to our Retro Tokyo racers at the Checkpoint Cup in January, 2014.

Unlike in real 1/1 racing, it never happens in Retro slot world that you lose your racing friends owing to accidents during races but we keep losing our good friends as years go by. Although age is beginning to tell on most of us, keep racing with good racing buddies in our memory.

Jay Phillip Kisling, of Shamong, NJ, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 14, 2015. He was 55 years of age. Originally from Reading, PA, he has resided in Shamong, NJ, for the past six years.

Jay is a National Slot Car Champion and was able to travel the world for the past 25 years racing and building slot cars. In 2004, Jay was the World Champion in Production B Class racing at the World Famous Jeff Port Raceway in Ronkonkoma, NY. He is the store manager at the SpeedZone Slot Car Raceway & Hobbies in Mt. Holly, NJ. Jay was instrumental in building the SpeedZone business; besides managing the store during open hours, he built motors, chassis, and assembled cars for customers. Jay took pride in his all-around knowledge of the slot car industry and was always available to answer any questions. His customer base ranged from children doing Pinewood Derby racing to teenagers and adults racing different types of slot cars. When he wasn’t at the hobby shop, Jay enjoyed going to race tracks New Egypt Speedway and Bridgeport Speedway to watch the dirt modified car races.

He is survived by his father Richard Kisling and his cousin Ruth of Reading, PA. He is the son of the late Ruth Kisling (Nee Nagle).

Jay will deeply be missed by his friends at SpeedZone and his dirt modified racing group. Interment is private and at the convenience of the family.

In honor of Jay Kisling, SpeedZone Slot Car Raceway and Hobbies, 201 Pine Street, Mt. Holly, NJ, will be hosting a memorial race in the summer. A date and time will be announced at a later date.

Funeral arrangements are under the Bradley & Stow Funeral Home, Medford, NJ. (www.BradleyStow.com)

It's said that a man can be judged by the quality of his friends.

Godspeed.

Another racer taken away from us much too soon. Every time I read one of these sad passings my eyes scan to the birthdate and I find myself saying, "My God, he's younger than me."

His toy cars sit quietly in their box, who knows when they will ever be used again... Who but us truly understand the small joys these bring?
