As most BPR racers know the usual format for qualifying for all the SCRRA Retro races is based on the fastest single timed lap determining the starting positions in the races of the day. Lately many racers have voiced concerns over the emphasis placed on single lap qualifying in setting the six A Main positions and suggested perhaps other formats to allow "racing in" other than timed laps to determine the A Main positions. At the Zimmerman in two weeks the SCRRA will try something just a little different to mix things up and to satisfy both the "timed lap" guys and the ones who favor a "race in" format.

The qualifying will be as usual and the only changes will be that only the top four qualifiers will be guaranteed spots in the A Main and the following seven will now constitute the B Main. All the other Mains will be seeded as normal depending on the number of racers. As usual two racers will move up from the C Main to the B Main but the B Main will now be a nine-man round robin with the top four now moving to the A Main with the five racers not making the move-up available as the necessary turn marshalls.

So... simply put, the top four qualifiers will make the A Main with four move-ups "racing in" from the B Main to fill the eight A Main event positions.

This seems like a pretty good compromise with a 50/50 split and most of the racers agree and it only adds an additional ten minutes to the day's proceedings.

Also, don't forget that all cars for this event must be brought to the tech table with the body OFF to allow a pre-race motor and body inspection.

More to follow tomorrow...  :)

Why not use the Worlds racing format?

That way the on A Main making whiners will feel like they have a chance.

Can we blame this on Mill, too?

Yeah, Mill, if it wasn't for you BP Retro would be a happy Kumbayah-fest! :D  They'd all be sitting around the campfire, in the parking lot, holding hands and singing folk songs!

You're to blame for this not happening. :laugh2:

I think it's a good way to make almost everyone happy. Those who like timed qualifying still get your shot. You just gotta step up now to make the top four. Those that like laps and sections get your shot also. Stay on and go fast enough to place the top four.

End result get that hair lap or stay on and make laps during the B.

Then the winner in the A has to do both! Go fast and stay on. :D

John,

It's almost EXACTLY what we have ALWAYS been doing except instead of the usual six racers automatically making the A Main based on timed laps now only four will be in. And, in the B Main, instead of the usual two move-ups, we will now have four to fill out the eight-man A Main.

It just takes a bit of emphasis off the one timed lap format and places a bit more emphasis on "racing in" and allows more racers a chance to get into the Main Event.

We'll see how it works out and if the racers don't like it we'll go back to the old format but personally I just can't see how the majority of the racers would reject a format that enabled them a much better chance of making it into the A Main.  :)

Well, I wouldn't worry too much about John. If he gets his hands on a good ride, he'll qualify pretty damn well.

This is gonna be a mighty good race I'm thinking. Will be some very fast guys at this event.

I want to see the peasants with torches!

Our local racing organization doesn't usually have over 20 in a class so we aren't dealing with the same problems you guys are. I've always though a system where nobody makes a Main with out having to make a move-up is the fairest. I prefer a different system but California outlawed dueling a long time ago.

Wish I could be there for the race.

A bit more explanation here on the tech inspection changes at the Zimmerman "Festival of Speed."

As mentioned previously, at this event, all cars must be brought to the tech table with their bodies off to facilitate a simple pre race motor inspection and also to weigh any body that may be considered too thin.

The Can-Am body situation and shortage at BPR seems to be a thing of the past with the recent supply of many of the preferred and legal TrueScale and Outisight bodies but we will still be checking for the lightweight bodies and a minimum weight of 5.5 grams will be enforced. I've never had much luck moving pictures around so for an explanation of this, with pictures, please see Retro Can-Am body situation at BPR, post #14.

The body removal for motor inspection will be for Can-Am and F1 only and not RetroPro. Can-Am will be the only class with the body weights checked.

Jason, isn't Retro Pro decided by which car is still running, not total laps?

So let me get this straight...

If Duran has a bad day qualifying and is only fifth and he's in the B, I could legitimately say I raced Duran at the Zimmerman, that would be cool.

Oh wait... I'd have to qualify no lower than 11th, or move up a race or two (or more) for that to happen.

Hmmm, just disregard this part of my post, worked late last night, need some Mt Dew to fully wake up.

Gentlemen, there's some race out there wherein the fastest qualifiers are placed at the "back of the pack" to start the race...I think its some NASCAR all star race....thinking along those lines, I think the fastest 4 qualifiers should start in the last lettered main, with the last four lane choices!!!!!!  Heh Heh
