Hi Guys,

Sorting through some Cox bits I spotted what I assumed was a chassis extension used to turn a sidewinder into a stocker chassis, but quickly realised I was wrong.  It certainly looks like a Cox part.  It fits neatly on the front of an inline chassis from under an F158 or BRM, however that still doesn't explain what it's for.  It raises the top of that chassis so high it would be difficult to fit it under anything but a stocker body.  I had hoped that the two holes at the sides would line up with the front mounting posts on the cox sports car bodies and allow the inline chassis to be used in place of a sidewinder, but the holes aren't wide enough.  Besides, none of the usual front axle holders will fit with that part installed.  Does anyone know what it's for, and can you provide me a pic of a car with one installed?

I don't need a fast answer. That'll give the others time to show what they know. :-)

Philippe leaves for Europe tomorrow for about a month.

I've emailed him the link and if you're lucky, he will reply before he gets on the plane.

I have one in stock.

ED has them listed, too.

COX9277 Cox "NASCAR" extension for all magnesium frames

I used one in the last 50 years... haha

The package sez in-line but (IIRC) I used one on a 'standard' SW chassis to make a 4.5" General Lee Dodge Charger wheelstander.

That's all I know... I swear. LOL.

That chassis was the very first Cox used in the slot car market under the Ferrari 158 and the BRM F1 cars circa 1964. It was also used for the 1/32 scale GT40 and the Cheetah.

Maybe that extension was for those two cars?

The Cox BRM was my second 1/24 car.

Walled the bank on the King at Closter... parts all over... and it came back as a thingie with no fronts and a Joker playing card as the wing body.

Steve, I don't think these were used in a Cox production application.

So that's what they were used for... LOL.

I've had another play, and there's no way they fit anywhere on the sidewinder. If you look at the top when it's installed snugly on the inline it even has the checkout for the can bearing to line up with the one on the chassis.

Aside from providing a slot to put a body screw in, I can't see what else it provides as the channel is too wide for the front axle thingy. I might make a front axle carrier up just so I can use it under something.

Do a Google search for images of "Cox slot car chassis" and it shows lots of good photos.

My memory tells me the extension was used as an accessory piece so the F1 frames could be used under other cars. All the cox cars that used the inline frame had the front suspension mount to a body post and not to the frame. by adding this extension you could mount the frame under any car. Seems like I also remember there was an extension that would let you lengthen the s/w frames to fit under a stock car. Those are all items I never used, but do remember them back in the old days. Somebody ought to jump in here with exact info. I seem to remember Cox made two extensions.

Is there a Cox expert in the house?

So far I'm the only one posting that has actually used one. I don't Cox stuff all that well. After that first go around with those ... cars, o'boy.... never looked back.

Never really liked them... look great, but drive absolutely crappy on big tracks, probably a very nice large homeset car.  They might have 'worked' a decade later when the track was slathered with glue....LOL

I have an original Lotus Ackerman RTR 'time capsule'... NeVeeer on track, never disassembled or cleaned, wrong right fronts, paper sticker #s, oddball driver paint ... Want it?

I'm no Cox expert but I think Matt got it right.

This piece connects the chassis proper with the simulated front suspension & wheels of the F1 Ferrari/BRM.

Then the chassis could be used under non-Cox bodies.

My Cox cars were always more show than go.

Alas, nobody seemed to slow to admire my finely detailed machines with the big head driver figures as they lapped me.

extension that would let you lengthen the s/w frames to fit under a stock car.

That would have been the one I used in the 4.5" car.

I don't remember if it was Cox #9277, which was my guess above.

After checking stock and then I do believe the NASCAR reference on the ED/LASCM site to be well researched.

Ill vote for Matt's idea too, to far back to recall and I even worked in at a Track for a season.  As for Cox's running on big tracks, we had COX only races (Lotus, GT 40s and Chappies) . Werent blistering fast but seemed to run well enough for  good racing and for most of us (early teens) it was what we could afford! :sarcastic_hand:

The fun with the old s/w cars is to run races with only those cars. They can be made to run decent, but not blinding speed. The Lotus always seems to be the best runner with it's lower center of gravity.

It's funny how slot car design progressed in the early days. The early Buzco/Manta Ray chassis was probably best of the earliest designs. It was a good starting place for many designs. Cox engineers designed a neatly cast, magnesium chassis with lots of screws and things to attach to it. Really it was nightmare for a 12 year old kid to put together and when he put it on the track, the Manta Rays blew him away.

By 65 The AMT brass chassis was probably one of the cheapest to make, just stamp a piece of brass. It was also one of the best early designs and over time has been copied a lot times with some variation. The simple pan design is the basis of everything that emerged over the years. You can still take a repro AMT chassis, put a pla fit motor in it with a hard body and have a decently fast highly detailed car. Basically the H&R chassis is almost a direct copy.

The old Cox cars are probably the most collectable though and most remembered of all the 60's stuff. Most collectors start with Cox.
