Things finally quieted down enough for me to officially start on the drag strip last night. I'll post pictures in the future when things have progressed a little further.

Some of the features will include;

Along with the 1/4 mile/55 ft. length, there will be approx. 40 ft. of shutdown, to hopefully, minimize the need for heavy gluing.

Probably on a limited basis, up to 30v of power available for those who chose to test the upper limits of their motors.

While he isn't around to help with the construction, as he was with the flat track, the strip will be named Ray Price Memorial Dragway.

That's a geat name and tribute! If you need a banner or vinyl let me know, I would be honored to donate something to the Ray Price Memorial Dragway.

Yes, I of course planned to contact you for the lettering on the wall.

Thanks much for the offer, Ralph.

Mike, are you going to use tongue and groove to connect the sections?

I'll do a traditional tongue and groove with horizontal bolts as a backup, but with drag cars staying in a virtual constant line on the roadbed, I'm going to try a simple lap joint with recessed vertical bolts first.

Mike,

Are you working on the drag strip during the day or at night? I would like to come over and lend a hand and maybe learn something.

I built a drag strip about 20 years ago and would like to see how you do it.

I'm working on it as I can squeeze in time.

Summer business has been stronger than I expected.

I'll contact you when I'm in the meat of it, and when I know I'll be able to work on it at 5+ hours at a stretch.

How long are you back in Chicago?

Been distracted with a few other things, but I've made progress on the drag strip.

I went with 3/4" MDF to maintain flatness.

With the weight of the thick material, I decided I had to start with 2'× 4' "handipanels" for ease of handling.

Not just for general lifting, but also for ease of squaring up.

I plan to route off the front edge and also don't want to do any Bondo work unless absolutely necessary.

20150823_183512.jpg
The leg and leg support system has worked out well so far.

2' × 4's, with holes cut all the way through, with a Forstner bit, for common 2"(2 3/8"dia.) ABS plumbing pipe.

About as inexpensive as you can get, but plenty strong.

The 2' × 4's are glued and clamped to the roadbed, to try to minimize stress/ retain flatness.

The supports are dadoed to allow the use of a composite wedge shim to adjust the height.

20150823_183010.jpg
Each 47 7/16" long piece is connected with a 3/4" thick MDF, 11 5/8" long, lap board.

One side is glued and the other uses 6- 3/8" vertical bolts, with nylon insert, lock nuts.

I square up the front side as shown, before drilling and installing the bolts.

The bolt holes are obviously not in the path of the cars and will be covered up.

The middle, probably by a short dividing wall.

The outside, by easily removable trim of some sort.

20150824_201539.jpg
The above joint is an example of what I'm striving for, especially for the exposed parts of the road bed.

The spacing of the 18" wide roadbed is 5"- car slot #1 - 8"- car slot 2"- 5".

Each side will lose about 3/8" for the width of the dado/ notch in the 3/4" MDF wall's.

20150823_183117.jpg
The above shows the lapboard, slightly narrower than the roadbed, to allow for the dadoed wall to be installed.

The two holes are 1" diameter passages for the braid drops.

One of the advantages of the short, 4' sections, is the frequent drops, which will allow many/frequent taps.

Nice if I decide to go after some serious speed.

20150825_181255.jpg
I have 20 ft.(minus 3" or so) done so far.

As hoped, each subsequent section is getting finished quicker than the previous one.

Wow! You've made some major progress since last week and the drag strip looks terrific; Mike!

I grew up going to US30 Drag Strip as a kid. My uncle was a mechanic and gear head. After two tours of Nam with the 101st Airborne he would take my cousin Mark and I on Sundays. We obviously saw all the legends that raced there. I remember Big Daddy Don Garlits being patient and paying attention to us mesmerized boys even while he was getting his top fueler ready for the next race. We'd always stock up on drag racing stickers at the souvenir shack as they called it there too.

All great drag strips have names we will always recall with much fondness. Where I am going with this is perhaps a tribute to an amazing man I just got to know a little and who's name often comes up with so much love and camaraderie. Many of you were blessed to have known him for decades.

He was to slot racing what Garlits was to drag racing.

I humbly suggest perhaps the new drag strip he would have loved to build side by side with Mike, would have loved racing it and would have thoroughly enjoyed helping others get into slot drag racing be a tribute to Manta Ray Price as ... The Manta Ray Dragway at Chicagoland Raceway.

Just a thought  :)

Marty, thanks.

Someone PM'ed me asking a question about bracing the PVC legs.

I'm not sure they realize what 2" PVC is.

They call it 2", but it's 2 3/8" in diameter.

IOW, it has a 3/16" wall thickness.

Last night, with it still cleaned off and covered from my grandson's birthday party, I got up on it and walked the existing 40' length of it.

I weigh 225, so unless we start racing cars that weigh over 115 lbs. each, I'm pretty sure the track will be strong enough.lol

I did the same sort of thing on a portable track using pvc and these:

4c65c54a-f392-4b47-831e-16f44858ded3_400

Locked a 6" piece of pvc into the bracket and used the next smaller size for the actual leg.

Still, a solid kick at the bottom would shift the bottom of the leg. If that's an issue cross connecting near the bottom as you have at the top would help.

100% sober.

I was showing the last few guys in the raceway how strong it was.

I straddled up, on top of it, and then impromptu, I realized, with it covered, footprints wouldn't be an issue.

I wouldn't of done it if the wall wasn't there to help steady me.

The only time it made any kind of noise was when I stepped on a spot where a leg wasn't seated all the way up in the pocket, not was there an adjustment wedge on the dadoed notch.

I had to put it aside for a bit, because of 2 big events in a 3 week span.

After the Hardbody Nat's, this coming Saturday, I'll be getting back on it.

I have 71 ft. of roadbed done.

I have approx. 24 ft. more of roadbed/shutdown, to add, and then on to some walls and slots

I've probably mentioned before, I'm hoping I'm doing a precise enough job to reference that front edge to cut the first 95 ft. long slot.

All I know is I have some ambitions to build a portable strip in the future.

It will be made a different way.

Probably 1/2" MDF and not a lot of care if it has a bit of personality.

Thanks for the encouragement, Tim.

I'll keep at it.

I get a 2-4 guys every week calling, or e-mailing, checking on progress.

Should be getting back to it tonight.

Seven birthday parties last week took some of the wind out of sails.

Only one party this week, so things should be a bit better.
