[PCH Parts Express]

How about The Underpass? Or Freedom Raceway?

If I was to open a shop the name would be something like miniature auto racing world Something that someone not familiar with slot cars might be intrigued by. Most of those born in the past 2 generations have no idea what the hell a slot car was or is. I always thought the term slot car was never a good term to use for the general public. Just my 2 cents.

Now that all the local commercial tracks are closed, I race at Sick Puppy, a club track. I like the names In-the-Groove Model Car Raceway & LeMans Raceway.

My good friend Mike McKinney used to own a slot track in Oregon called "Cottage Grove Raceway".  He loves to tell the story of phone calls that he used to receive from people who were clearly looking for the local 1/4 mile oval, dirt track, "Cottage Grove Speedway".  The conversation would go something like this:

 

Phone: ring-ring

 

Mike: Hello, Cottage Grove Raceway

 

Caller: Is there a race tonight?

 

Mike: Yep, we're racing NASCAR tonight.

 

Caller: NASCAR?... really ???

 

Mike: Sure, come on down.  We even have rental cars, if you want to race.

 

Caller: What?  Really?

 

Mike: Yep, $5 entry fee, $10 for the car and controller.  We're in the old Armory building downtown.

 

Caller: Wait.... what ???

 

Mike: You're probably looking for the dirt track.  Hang on, I'll get you the number.

Slots-A-Lot would get calls asking how many Slot Machines they have.

I think my point was made in a couple of the above posts. Lol. Honestly I don't think more than a half a dozen people in the past 8 years since I started racing again had any idea what slot cars were. And if they had an idea it was completely wrong.

Something along the lines of Model Car Speedway or Raceway.  Leaves less room for confusion.  I remember the calls I got from my raceway, Daytona Slots.  I even had churches in the area question whether or not the name was appropriate for children.

I agree with Tony, leave slot out, MINIATURE CAR RACEWAY & HOBBIES

Slots-A-Lot would get calls asking how many Slot Machines they have.

Some raceway owners have had trouble with business permits because of the word “slot” because of the slot machine connection.

Use a name that’s not cryptic, use model raceway, miniature speedway, etc.

The very first commercial raceway that I raced at was called Midamerica Model Raceway.  Hence why I named my raceway that when I opened.  It tells exactly what it is.

There used to be a track in Sydney called SLOTZ. I always liked that name.

Sam, have you noticed he's recently been trying to sell a zapper? Probably because his source for Deathstars dried up. You too could become a "Turbo Blaster."

Maybe you could also have an Expresso machine...a quick pick-me-up before the race...gives the term "Speedway" a little extra kick...

A small counter top case with some donuts and bagels...a wifi hotspot...space limitations permitting of course...

I agree with Tony, leave slot out, MINIATURE CAR RACEWAY & HOBBIES

I agree with the above, but would leave out the "hobbies" unless one was a full service hobby shop.

When I worked for "Downtown Hobbies", I had a woman come in looking for macrame supplies.

Our back and forth was so crazy, I'm not sure I want to share it.

PS- in the Chicago area, in the 60's, among the 200 or so raceways, we had 2 Tom Thumbs and 2 Motorama's.

I'm sure the Tom Thumb's weren't connected, and I'm pretty sure neither were the Motorama's.
