And thanks for the link, Phil. From the video I watched, I assume the comparator measures very small things, correct?

To expand on Mike's question, Phil, can you speak to how an optical comparator is used or is useful in a machine shop environment? I've never fully understood that.

I found the optical comparator very handy for inspecting external features. If I wanted to check a .025" inch radius, the optical comparator would show a 10 times image which would be a 1/4 inch radius on the screen. I would compare this image to a series of curves to verify the radius was in tolerance. The unit I had access to also had a moving table with X-Y measuring to .001 inch. I would set a drilled plate on the table, locate one hole as 0,0 and then check the X,Y locations of the other holes in the pattern.

Thanks, Bob.

That makes perfect sense.

They're also used for checking tool dimensions when they're being ground. When I ran certain parts I had form tools made with diametrical differences as little as .0035". The shop that ground that tool needed to check the step in both height and width and relationship to the other features of the tool. That's a very iffy thing to do with mikes and very time consuming with height gages and surface plates.

What you may have not seen in the video, because the video didn't zoom in, is the glass has etched lines and patterns on it. The usual glass has a set of lines radially extending out from the center with semi-circles on one half and gradations stepped out from the center with tick marks on the x and y lines and grid of lines on the other half. Sounds complex but once you see it it is easily understood.

I made the mistake of entering one of their giveaways a few years ago. It's mainly a front to get you to buy some cheap crap on monthly installments. And they really get after you to buy some crap!

Bill,

I know. TTBOMK, I have viewed exactly one (1) model railroad video in my life, and that was at least a couple of years ago, if not more.

Who knows why they're showing up now.

Any guesses as to what the country of origin is for this ad? My gut tells me it's not the USA. :D
