Saturday was another great day of racing for the gang at Slots of Fun in beautiful Downtown Abbeville, SC. A nice surprise is having our old friend, Marty Cwiakala (or "Dr. C" as his students know him at the technology center), join us once again. As the school year progresses, we expect to see less of Marty.
That's Dan Parker behind the counter and Richard Sylvester reaching for one of the many bodies that proprietor Don Berni hangs around the shop.
Saturday's events were held on the Slots of Fun world-famous Grandstand...
...even though it proved a little trickier than usual for some of us...well, at least me.
First up, the flexi GTP class. Once again, Richard Sylvester proved too fast for the rest of the pack.
Dan Parker 2nd; Richard Sylvester 1st; David Erickson 3rd
Next up, the monthly 7-68 Can-Am race featuring the Pro Slot FK motors. And yet again, Richard Sylvester proved his mechanical muscle, running away from the pack with a great performance, besting both David Erickson and your illustrious author.
David Erickson 2nd; Richard Sylvester 1st; Jim Beasley 3rd
Keeping the races moving along is our longtime race director, Jerry Richey, who sits in the shadow of his overseer, the Keebler Elf...
Once the races were complete, we have to spend a little time browsing the wares, which are extensive. You have to see this stuff to believe it...
The group always enjoys looking over the goods and making a few unexpected purchases. BTW, that's David's lovely bride, Karen Erickson, to the right. She serves as David's pit crew and corner marshal. We're always glad to have her on-hand.
On this day, we didn't use the Slots of Fun tri-oval...
... but it's possible we could in future races – although there's current talk that the raceway's sale could be in the works.
We tip our hats to Don Berni for providing us a great racing venue, to Jerry Richey for keeping the races moving along, and to the winners. You'll never find a friendlier racing environment than Slots of Fun.
All we can do now is wait until next month's races. Hope you'll join us.
