I just looked and Freeblog has disappeared. Did it get killed?

Yes, after much input from the membership, advertisers, and moderators, and considering how the posting volume there had diminished to almost nothing. I know there will be a few members who will be unhappy about this action, but clearly many more wanted Freeblog to go.

What pushed me over the edge was when the creator of the Freeblog forum called to tell me it was time for it to go.

OK… it's a trend on some other boards I belong to: they're killing those "free" discussion areas because of the headaches and nastiness that spills out into other areas of the board.

Phil,

It's actually happening in print media as well.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution had a long-running feature called The Vent, where people could phone in short comments on any subject and each day the editors would print the more interesting ones.

The Vent was discontinued a few weeks back and one of the paper's readers finally asked yesterday why it had disappeared. Their answer is relevant to why Freeblog was dumped:

"After much careful deliberation, we came to the conclusion that The Vent had run its course.

It’s important to remember that The Vent was introduced long before we were all using Facebook and Twitter.

With social media more popular than ever, contributions to The Vent had dwindled to an all-time low. In recent months, it had also taken a nasty turn, and policing the profanity and insulting comments proved to be too much.

As we enter the political season, we’re striving to be more mindful than ever of balance and bias concerns, and The Vent, we felt, had the potential to jeopardize those efforts."

Since Facebook became the official home of mindless rants most of these other forums became redundant.

So will there be a new place to post things that don't really fit into the already existing forums? A catch-all, so to speak?

Good question, Mike P.

I wondered the same thing myself, as I'm having a refrigerator issue that neither electricians, nor appliance repairmen, can figure out. I'll bet my Slotblog buddies are smarter than all of them.

But, nowhere to post that now.

<<SARCASM ON>>

So, why not kill signatures? They've run their coarse (pun intended)...

<<SARCASM OFF>>

I believe there should be an off-topic forum with the purpose of non-slot car topics but with a big warning about political, social, trolling-type posts being prohibited… the 1:1 forum could be an approved place for things like repairs, requests of opinions on THINGS (not politics) like TVs, household items, computer help and so on... Punish those who post otherwise.

Again, I'm disappointed about the Freeblog killing but Greg saw that it wasn't really fitting into his idea what Slotblog should be. That's his decision and I won't contest it. It will most likely improve the board. Kind of like cutting out a cancer that's benign: it doesn't really do harm but what's the reason to keep it around?

The "toilet flush" is actually not a bad idea.

Some of my posts, for example - once the problem is solved or a need fulfilled, I don't care to see it anymore.

Yah, but it did harm. That's the danger in things like this, and there'll always be attempts to remedy or repair afterwards, some heavyhanded and some right.

Ehh, signature taglines are quick to read and easy to accept, dismiss, ignore. They're only intrusive once, if at all, then the eye slides over 'em. We're free to be the jerks we are, unless&until our jerkdom impacts another jerk's freedom.

On another board, the name is "Bad Dog Cafe." Start anything non-topic, just no politics, religion, sexuality, & keep it civil and within forum guidelines. Works, mostly. The mod monitors pretty vigilantly and scrubs anything even heading toward dangerous, and he means it - sometimes in strange ways.

I once disputed his removal of a Meme featuring a [perfectly-tastefully-covered!] nude woman, saying it's a distortion of sensibility to kill that one and let the picture of a grossly obese male in a thong stay, pendulous manboobs and all. He responded. "I can cut you with a single keystroke, Buddy. Play by MY rules here."

Well, listen, I like the site, so I use it in the ways I can benefit from its very valuable content.

And that's a fine difference: there've been guys on Slotblog who would squeeze a mention of their resentment into every post they made, however innocuous the original topic. But how's that work at the track? Yes, we know you've been stung. Now, do you want to stand in the back grumbling or do you want to hook up your controller and race? Because that's why we're here.

Honestly, I rarely read Freeblog, so it wasn't a big issue for me. And don't forget the majority of members never saw it.

But over time, numerous members expressed their opinions that Freeblog was a liability, not an asset.

I am still leaning toward creating an off-topic subforum with the restrictions you mention, as there is non-slot material worth posting here.

I don't recall being that blunt yet, but it could happen... LOL!

From some Freeblog posters their political hatred were so intense and undisciplined they occasionally flung insults at some like myself who benefit by governments' Socialist policies.  This kind of irrational behavior has no place in this forum particularly when such folk's involvement in the slot car hobby seemed inversely proportional to the frequency of their hostile postings.  They may rightfully join any number of forums like Stormfront and Tea party Nation that cater to the those who are having difficulty with current political and societal changes.

Who does not like taking part in some "bench racing" so it always seemed strange when the same people you would normally enjoy talking to seemed to let flail in Freeblog. If we could reproduce the same feeling that we have at the raceway that would be great.

Zip, you may be assuming a cause and effect situation, when that is not actually the case.

PdL and I discussed starting a new forum for almost three years before he got a wild hair, registered the domain, and created the first version of Slotblog on a free forum website. The reasons had less to do with "free speech" than the feeling that the breadth and history of the model racing hobby were not being addressed.
