Folks,

The C.A.R.S. Vintage Slot Car club will have it's October meeting on Thursday Oct. 1, 2015 at 7:30 PM at The Race Place located in the TALCO Building rt. 33w Farmingdale NJ. 732-938-5215.

In the past October has been our "thingie" themed meeting, we'll continue the tradition this year !  Vampires, Asps, Batmobiles...you get the idea.

Fellas,

If we are motivated we might even put together a brand new/old "thingie" slot car with some pics of the project...

Fellas,

A rainy evening saw a light turnout but much discussion concerning the vintage slots. Thingie Night, always a favorite of the group, was somewhat jinxed from the start as my camera was left at home !  :dash2:   Some of my cars, mostly CLASSIC variety thingies were somewhat "stiff" from they long sleep. Most of them were uncooperative to say the least and wouldn't even run ! Some serious maintenance will be needed to bring them back from the dead ! :shok:

Still we had the railbirds who were in house involved in some heavy discussion of racing from "back in the day" !  Both scale and 1:1 racing topics were the subject of the evening.

As mentioned earlier we'll look to build a brand new/old Thingie in honor of the season...stay tuned !!!

Fellas,

I'm in the process of gathering parts and I'm about done. I'm having a time finding the correct guide shoe, I may just go with a vintage Jet Flag and go ahead with the build ... :dash2:

Fellas,

Looks like I've got most of the parts I'll need...a BZ Banshee is the "thingie" of choice. We'll try to stay as close as possible to the original with the parts available, the guide shoe still eludes me and the Banshee will more than likely go with the Jetflag for now.

One of Victor's gorgeous Banshee rebops will grace the build. I'll try to come up with a paint job that will reflect the era but differ enough to see to it that it's not confused for an original...stay tuned !

Folks,

After some delay we finally got underway with the "Thingie" build. My first decision had to do with a choice as to which chassis would be used for the car. While I do have a near mint BZ rebop chassis I decided to go with the old one that I had laying around for several decades.

The chassis that will be used saw many "hot laps" at the old RACE PLACE at the Collingwood Auction. I recall buying the chassis brand new "back in the day" for about $3.00 and change. This was in about 1975 when I first got into slot cars...anyway here's the chassis.

While it certainly does show considerable seasoning, it is sound and sturdy and more than up to the task of once again hitting the track.

The motor shown suffers from "end bell fatigue" and will be replaced by a similar motor that is in much better condition. While it also has seen some action, it will be fine !

Next I decided to put the chassis up on it's wheels and tires and get a spur gear in place. Wheels and tires were in house and

installed. I added 3 prong knock-offs to try to copy the look of the original BANSHEE. I learned from experience long ago that a dab of white glue on the end of the axle will prevent the knock-off from being lost at speed !

My choice for the task is WELDBOND, I highly recommend it for numerous slot car related adhesive needs. It dries clear, is non-toxic, it's water, lighter fluid and oil proof. I won't mar painted surfaces nor will it attack "card stock" interiors...

The body was started this morning. Lots of cutting and sanding...several different diameter tire bottles served as a way to make the wheel wells nice and round, film canisters work well too !  Sticky backed sandpaper attached to the bottles works wonders, so does the sanding block for the straight parts on the body like rocker panels or front chin spoilers.

Fellas,

I had to narrow the track in order to lower the body somewhat. I'll need to tweak the body mounting tabs a bit to get it to sit right.

The jury is still out on the paint job, but I'd like to get it done for the November 5th meeting of the C.A.R.S. club.

Great job Pete. What color will it be?
Joseph Migliaccio. Karma it's a wonderful thing.

Some people are like Slinkies... they're really good for nothing... but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down a flight of stairs.

Joe,

I'm not sure just yet, maybe an attempt to replicate the original colors or maybe an updated style ?

Phil,

I wanted to respond sooner but I needed to take some photos. Great color choice, but I've already got a gold one. It's cut a good bit differently than the standard Banshee...

Nice. So, what color did you paint it? I would like to see it.

I think the designer did one up the Manta Ray with the Banshee.

Phil,

The car isn't quite done but here's some shots of the body,I still have to "clean it up" somewhat ... fix a broken lead wire and attach it to the chassis.
