I met a guy Saturday who has a Challenger SRT392. He just ordered a Hellcat. He is trading the SRT on it, and said the dealer is giving him close to what he paid for it. I find that hard to believe, but the Hellcat is costing half again as much. The SRT is about nine months old.

By the way, this will be the 19th car this guy has bought from this dealer in less than 10 years.

Having driven both, and for what they cost, I think I would rather have the SRT Challenger with the 392 Hemi and a Tremec six-speed.

I can tell a story about prepping one for the dealer I work for and taking a salesman for a ride and scaring the crap out of him, but the Hellcat is a niche vehicle just like a Viper TA. Don't get me wrong, the Hellcat Challenger is a beast and the eight-speed auto is definitely faster getting to 130 MPH because of its shifting versus the Tremec-equipped Hellcat, but I just can't justify the doubled price.

After all, can you tell the difference between a 190 MPH top end SRT 392 and a 204 MPH Hellcat?  Put five more grand into the SRT 392 and give it a racing suspension then put in an aftermarket PCM... and you are there.... maybe just a tick slower in the quarter... but the top end will be there.

And the Hellcat Charger... which is even more rare... has a faster top end speed than the Challenger due to less drag in the front end... go figure.

He is taking a $10,000 to $14,000 bath on that SRT all day everyday regardless of how the dealer makes it look on paper.
