CanAm on the Sovereign – 11/24/15
10 CanAm Racers in Tech:
It was back to the “Purple Mile” to race CanAm this week. Ten racers took to the track, racing the outside 4 lanes and then the inside 4 lanes in order to have adequate corner marshals. The arrangement made for a long evening, as 20 heats were required to give the entire field a shot at each lane. After the final heat it was John Weaver taking the win by a 13 lap margin over Dave Panich in 2nd with Ray Lee claiming the final spot on the podium, down by 7 laps to Dave.
For the most part, track calls were limited and racing was clean. However, one drawback to the Purple Mile is there is a lot of distance covered at full throttle and a rider generally does significant damage. There were a few riders during the race and that drawback proved itself just about each time as the wall hits were loud and hard. One such incident caused Justin Ewell to DNF for the second race in a row, though this time disaster struck at the end of his last heat and, amazingly, he was still able to manage 4th place. On the other hand, Dick Griffin found the wall early in the race and suffered from gear and handling problems during the first round. This was resolved during the break and he had a faster car than his finishing position would indicate.
Even though he was lacking horsepower, Peter Lentros was able to edge out Richard Payne for 5th place by less than a lap. Dan Savage and Rich Girvin finished on the same lap with Dan taking the 7th finishing spot by a slim margin of 11 sections. Brian Wright was another lap and a half behind Rich in 9th. Dick Griffin finished out the field.
