In 1967, Howie and Sandy visited our raceway, GranPrix Raceway, in the Bronx. Howie and Sandy ran their scale versioned F1 cars, while my brother and I ran our Jail Door/dropped axle/thingie-based cars. I've recently had some of my slides re-enhanced. Here are some images, from that day.

Awesome pics.

Howie even looks more handsome... if that was possible.

He does "clean up" well. At Speedzone, I promised Howie, that I would post these images.

Awesome. Was Ray Carlisi there that day, too?

What kind of track is that?

Is the story true that he traded that one guy, a rewound 22, for that long white jacket and walked out super-stylin'?

I remember visiting that track (once) for a GT Coupe race. (I believe it was a Car Model race.)

I too would like to know what track that was, I think I saw a similar one in New Hampshire but I can't be sure.

Yup, Ray Carlisi and Dave Liebenthal were regulars at the raceway.

I'm pretty sure, that the track was a Mr. Raceways track. Bronx Raceway (Gunhill RD) had the same track, but ran it in the other direction.

The guy in the trenchcoat, was Chris Saxby, an ace airline mechanic. We had a nice crew, at our raceway.

That track was a Mr. Raceway's Lemans model, built in Cambridge, MA. It had four two-driver positions placed around the track. All lanes had polarity switches, so drivers weren't too careful about wiring they cars correctly.

We had the same track in Brunswick, ME, when I started commercial racing in 1967. The raceway at Woodfords Corner in Portland had a huge Mr. Raceways track in excess of 200', but i forget the name of this model.

American Model Raceways also made a very similar track called alzo called a Lemans. The picture is from Modelville Hobby's site that tells how the modified figure 8 came to be from the Lemans.

So Al, did Team Comet clean up on Team Russkit?

Or at least, did they scrub Howie's filthy mind clean?

As I recall, the Modelville history write-up says they had an AMR Lemans at one point. That was before I started racing there in the fall of 1969. The sketch they show has a bend in the middle of the short straight to the left of the bank. That short straight on the Brunswick Mr. Raceways Lemans didn't have a bend. In the track photos posted earlier, it appears to be straight also.

We ran the Brunswick Lemans backwards because it was assembled with the bank end of the track placed in front of a couple large plate glass windows. The raceway owner didn't want slot cars launching into these windows, even though he had a fine mesh netting hung from the ceiling to the bank.

Al,

I thought I'd play with your pics in my photo-editing program, just for grins.

Here's the result from your first pic:

I think it's an improvement. If you give the word, I'll process all of them and replace them in the first post.

... and loosen those ties! Poor Howie and Sandy having to wear jackets and ties at that age - how old were they in '67 in fact?

Great pics, thanks for posting.

Howie was 17 or 18, depending on when in '67 the pics were taken.
