Seven locals and Mark H. from Cottage Grove ran Super Stock and Vintage Econo at STR on 12/14/2015. Also, the Grinch made an appearance wreaking havoc on the Vintage Econo Race.

Vintage Econo racing is always close. The class calls for a chassis with only a limited rattle movement. This coupled with sealed power plants makes for fun and close competition. Ron and Terry battled it out throughout an entire heat. Below is an image of that finish.

James thought that Fuzzy dice would be the edge he needed for a Vintage Econo win. He was wrong.

Highlights of the race are as follows.
  • In and early heat of the Vintage Econo race, the Grinch prematurely started the race. The incident put Bob out of the running for a podium finish
  • In Vintage Econo, Jack put in a solid performance with his 49 Mercury to edge out Richs 55 Chevy for the top step of the podium. James finished third. Bad Luck Bob turned the fast lap of the evening in Vintage Econo but finished fourth.
  • In Super Stock, James had the quickest lap time and finished first with 89.1 laps nearly a lap ahead of Jacks GTO. Bob finished a distant third with 86.3 laps.
A few featured rides are shown below.

Vintage Econo

Everyone fielded their #1 car for the Vintage Econo contest, however, some bad luck intervened. The Grinch prematurely started the race in an early heat. Some were not ready and lost considerable running time. Bob suffered most. Even with the addition of a lap to each participants total in that heat Bob ran only 19 laps. That incident put Bob out of the running for a spot on the podium.

With Bob out of contention, Jack (49 Mercury) and Rich (55 Chevy) both running Deathstar power, battled it out for first place. Jacks fast lap of 5.278 was nearly .1 second quicker than Richs best of 5.354. However, Rich ran a more consistent race than Jack (95.15% vs 94.12%). I think that Jacks consistency, suffered due to some lost running time in the Grinch heat. Even so, Jack prevailed, finishing first with 85.6 laps edging out Rich by three sections. James had some handling problems, launching his orange 57 Chevy in the bank on at least two occasions, also putting him out of contention for the top two spots. In the end, James finished third, a full two laps behind the leader.

Super Stock

James ran a good race with his record holding Chevelle turning 89.1 laps for the win. Jack brought a knife to a gun fight in Super Stock. He selected his #2 ride; a Deathstar powered 69 GTO, rather than his quicker 72 Ford Torino. Even so, Jack ran a very consistent race (96.49%) to outdistance quicker Bob and Rich for second place. Both Rich and Bob ran 70 Chevelles that were quite evenly matched, turning fast laps within a whisker of each other. Rich suffered too many self-inflicted wounds and a nerf. In the end, Bob bested Rich by nearly a lap to finish third.
