For the last few months, I've been using PDFill to convert PDF files to images.

It converts each page of a  PDF file to an image.

You can choose which pages of the PDF file to convert.

The images can be saved as jpg, png, gif or five other formats.

The program is free.

It seems to be widely used and I've seen nothing to indicate that it contains any adware, malware, viruses, etc.

Of course, this is a Windows-only application.

I convert PDFs to images all the time on my Mac just by taking screenshots. OS X has a bunch of useful screenshot tools built-in to the operating system.

Using OS X you can also open PDFs (and many other files) in Preview, then use Save As to select your format of choice. Preview also has lots of tools like crop, rotate and so on... built-in application with many uses.
