When I arrived at SlotCars-R-US "the Track" yesterday about 5 PM, it was pretty obvious this was going to be a very well-attended event, as they were already forty or more racers in the building. And the geographic draw is simply incredible! There are racers here from Texas, Georgia, Kentucky, Alabama, Oklahoma, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, New York, California, Nebraska, Idaho, Canada, and Brazil... and I'm sure I am missing a few states. It will interesting to see if the Worlds at PJ Raceway this fall will be bigger, but there's no doubt in my mind this is race is going to either the biggest or second biggest Wing race in the US in 2016.

I'll post some candid snaps from the raceway in the next post, but lets start the reportage with the results of the Group F race which ran last night (Thursday).

Group F

Fifteen entries

This race was raced under all "all mains" format, with lap totals determining the final results and here they are.

1) Ron Keener - 475.42 laps, best race time of 2.839 secs in blue, qual time of 2.775 secs

2) Bob Hughes - 473.33, 2.911 in white, (2.817)

3) Mark Proppe - 468.39, 2.959 in blue, (2.915)

4) Jeff "Smokie" Bigelow - 456.50, 2.931 in orange, (2.875)

5) Mack McMahon - 452.27, 3.014 in black, (2.953)

6) Nicky Formosa - 448.18, 2.984 in orange, (2.959)

7) Johnny Marlin - 447.66, 3.011 in orange, (3.026)

8) Stan Hutson - 434.99, 2.701 in purple, (2.879)

9) Will Henley - 431.87, 2.979 in orange, (2.952)

10) Robert Redmond - 431.64, 3.118 in orange, (3.017)

11) Clyde Romero - 423, 3.094 in blue, (no time)

12) Mike Mischnick - 294, 2.920 in orange, (2.876)

13) Paul Peterson - 247, 3.065 in green, (3.124)

14) Mark Stratton - 144, 2.968 in yellow, (2.894)

15) Kris Stratton - 43, 3.127 in purple, (3.080)

Just a bunch of candid shots of the pits this morning. I'm still trying to put some faces with names for about half of the racers here, so I'll try to ID those I can.

DSCN4003.jpg

Standing on left is PJ Raceway owner Doug Bauer, Joe "Chubby" Salzman to his right, and Larry Pellegrini (I think) far right.

At the far right is Jim "Spove" Sproviero.

The "Buef" - Paul Pedersen, just about the most accomplished Wing car racer of all time. Everyone else in the raceway dreams of finishing ahead of this guy!

Noted slot car body painter Bob Hughes on the left.

DSCN4012.jpg

Back right is Clyde Romero from the Atlanta area, who is just getting back into slot racing. Clyde flew choppers in Nam, then F4 Phantom fighters. Please thank him for his service when you see/meet him.

A little practice happening on the new Gerding G21 King track.

A lot of racing experience in this shot. Chicago's Mike Iga on the left, with Brazil's Luis "Gugu" Bernardino on the near right, with Al Chuck behind him.

Congrats to Ronnie Keener and third place Mark Proppe, the main men at MMW for the Sunday Group F racing.
Hope to see more entries for the Group F championship in April. Ronnie is the multi-time champion and the man to beat.

Good to see the strong turn-out!

First class to be raced today is Hillbilly Box and tech is in progress, with the tech table very ably manned by Doug "Bent Rim" Bauer and Andy Wasserman, who will also be race-directing this weekend.

30 Hillbilly Box entries made it past tech.

Doug Bauer teching the cars, with trackowner Tracy Brown looking on and Andy Wasserman doing the paperwork. Not enough hair between the three of them to make a decent peach... LOL!

For those unfamiliar with wing car qualifying, most raceways pad the walls to keep the cars from being damaged if they take a hard hit.

Gugu doesn't look particularly thrilled with the lap he just cut...

TQ for Hillbilly Box was Tony Griffin at 1.985 seconds. He was the only qualifier to break the two-second barrier.

What are Hillbilly Box stock rules?

Bill,

I had to ask.

Base rules are USRA Box 12 with these mods:

Any steel chassis made for Box 12, with no weight limit or length restriction. Front pans can be removed.
Ball bearings anywhere you want them on the motor or the chassis.
Aluminum endbells are allowed.

It's referring to the rims. Trying to keep tire costs down. That opens the way to running the Koford Spec tire which is $13.00 MSRP. Compared to $24.00 for typical wing tires.

The unfortunate thing about that tire is that it is a short discount, which takes the money out of the raceways hands but Koford still gets paid. That's why some raceways won't carry it.

Sam,

We use some drilled hubs in Retro but I think they are referring to "waffle" rims where the entire wheel is drilled even under the rubber.

That's correct, what is called "waffling" is when the barrel is drilled perpendicular to the axle line. "Drilled" is when the back face of the hub is drilled parallel to the axle line.

Too bad they didn't run a Semi and a Main. 653 is big even with five guys. A 2.080 fast lap is friggin fast in 15s. Backed up with a bunch of 2.10s. Serious speed!

I am 99% sure that they ran a six and five man round robin. Unfortunately, if this is true, it would not qualify.  :( Which sucks!!

The above seems like a contradiction of terms.

Anyway, racing looks great. I'm real impressed how close the totals were in this race and especially Hillbilly Box 12.

The unfortunate thing about that tire is that it is a short discount, which takes the money out of the raceways hands but Koford still gets paid. That's why some raceways won't carry it.

This also why the price is lower...

Brad,

Understand I was only repeating what I was told. In any case, I am not aware that there are actually any recognized standards for wing car 'world records'. Are you?

Interesting that the HB box cars were faster than I15. The short stack of Gp 12 arms would probably explain it.

First class on the agenda for today is Group 27 Lite, which brought 36 entries to the tech table.

There wasn't a five-year old girl in the building to judge concours, so they settled for the second best choice.... me! It's a lot harder picking the top three out of 36 cars than it looks...

Group 27L concours

27lconc.jpg

First: Doug Bauer
Second: Wally Fleming
Third: Tony Griffin

Doug is not happy with me. "Winning concours is the kiss of death for the racing," he claims. Bent, if that's the way you feel, you need to use really ugly bodies! LOL.

Qualifying is in progress, with Georgia's on Tommy Flythe at the head of the line.

It is believed that the current 27 Lite 'world record' qualifying lap is 1.773, thus Rich Curnutte's TQ is a scant .004 secs behind that record.

Actually not really. In the race the fastest lap for 15s was 2.080 and for HBB was 2.186. Most 15s were in the 2.1s and the HBBs were 2.2s. Can't go by qualifying.

Intl 15s are still faster but it's much closer then with USRA Boxstock, and most of the increase in speed is the difference in weight.

One of the visitors to the Hillbilly Nats is an 1:1 racer whose notable accomplishments can't be obscured by the beard he now wears. Jeff Green won the 2000 Busch Series Championship (by 616 points!) and finished second in that series twice in other years. He was also won the pole at the Daytona 500 in 2003, among other significant successes in various stock car racing series including NASCAR's top division.

Jeff was also the Nashville Speedway track champion in 1990. The previous year's track champion at Nashville was Nicky Formosa, a regular racer at SlotCars-R-Us, who is also present at the raceway today.

Jeff was an active slot racer for several years in the Monroeville, North Carolina, area, though he indicated he's not had a controller in his hand for a while now.

I actually raced against Jeff at the WKA Spring Nationals in Charlotte, NC, in 2002 in Masters Can. I think he finished fifth or sixth. No comment on where I finished.
