Someone should pursue their doctorate degree in physics explaining why the glass side of cell phones and tablets tend to seek the ground. The harder the ground, the higher percentage/probability of glass/concrete collisions occur. This could also be a study in statistics for the pure math student.

Just venting!

The "Gorilla glass" used in mobile phones has a high internal tension which is what makes it harder to break. But when it does crack, it's catastrophic.

Synthetic sapphire was supposed to be on the iPhone 6, but production issues scrubbed that.

It is a subset of "Effect of Gravity on Buttered Toast."

LOL.

That'll cost you over $100 unless you happen to be in Vietnam and it's around $20. ;-)

Clumsy ox that I am, ever since I got a smartphone, I always enclosed it in a case that has a raised rubber edge around the glass.

My last phone lasted over four years and I know I dropped it over 80 times. usually onto hard surfaces like cement or asphalt.

My business partner who "hates cases" broke his glass in two months. <sigh>

My newest case has a rubber inner case and a hard plastic outer case with fold out stand and included a belt clip holster option. it's pretty cool. It cost me $6 delivered on eBay from some vendor in NY.

You want a case that's "grippie" also, it’s less likely you’ll drop it in the first place. I use a silicone case for my iPhone. Someone I know left his phone with a silicone case on the step bumper of a pick-up truck, after about six miles at highway speed it was still there.

My son has broken the screen on his Samdung phone four times and each time he orders a replacement glass off eBay, generally from China. The most I think he's paid, including shipping, is $12; it's usually about $10.50. They take about two weeks to arrive and in most cases come with tools and instructions on doing the replacement.

The sad part is he actually does have a "protective case" on his phone...

Phil,

Otter Box... dropped mine three times off the Wing of a C17, not a scratch. Work great.

I have an Otter Box and find it just too bulky for me. I can see there'd be people it would work well for.

At what altitude was the C17?

Oh… Well… I didn't break it. It's that if, somehow, it becomes free-flight it seems to land glass-side down. The screen was already broken (not shattered) and there was no new damage. It still works fine, in fact better because the Home button has been freed up.
