These guys are smokin' crack! If it ain't broke, DON'T FIX IT!

First they say they will go back to whats been so good for 10 years... and now they change again back to the "New" way and light of the F1... If this goes the same as the first race I'm going to write sponsors!

If it ain't broke, DON'T FIX IT!

Put the pipe down, F1!

If it ain't broke, DON'T FIX IT!!!

Well the teams decided on their own to drop this crap qualifying at Australia. Bernie and Todt were not at that meeting. Later in the week those two brain dead leaders gave the teams two options to vote on. Use the new format for Q1 and Q2 but revert back for Q3, or, invert the top 10 starting positions from qualifying.

Option one: They know they have egg on their face but must have a the change to throw their weight around and define them selves as the only voice that matters.

Option two: These idiots think guys will go fast just to be moved to the middle of the pack? Morons..... Every one will be shooting for 10th fastest to sit on the pole.

Bernie and the CVC group only care about making money. When F1 is ruined and nobody pays any attention any more they will blame the teams and drivers for the losses.

If the FIA and Todt do not revert back to last years format, I will not bother to watch. Might even send a paper letter to the FIA. Emails are to easy to delete and ignore.

Edit: make that inverting the top 8 positions, not the top 10. Still stupid.....................

They are trying to fix what was in some cases the most exciting part of the weekend.

The are looking in the wrong area to fix "the show". The cars and engines are the problem.

What I did not realize the teams don't have enough tires to run through qualifying. Except for the fastest teams who need 1 or 2 laps to get through a qualifier the slower cars have to keep running to try and make the move up burning up all their tires. Even Williams gave up to save tires for the race. Just stupid.

How is that fair not having enough rubber for qualifying? ! :shok:

Just doesn't make any sense.

Tony, I agree. The cars are not good for good racing. They tried to fix overtaking with DRS, pretty sad way to attack for the pass in my mind. They are now talking about more Aero for 2017 where drivers will be generating over 5g in the corners. If something breaks I fear we will see another Alonso or Kubica crash but the driver will be killed with the extra energy being generated.

F1 needs more mechanical grip and only moderate aero. They need to be able to pace the car in front through the corners and slingshot for a clean "Real" pass. Side-by-side racing is ALWAYS exciting.

I also hate the sound of the new engines. When compared to the v10 or even the v8 they sound like, well, not a race car to me. The only reason the new engines and Hamilton set a new track record today is those amazing v10 engines were being rev limited to cut costs. Those engine are almost free compared to these Hybrid units.

The technology is so high and complex I doubt most fans have any idea what it's all about. Your right they need to be able to run nose to tail and pass. Not pass in the pits or with the artificial DRS system.

Sorry but all the teams struggle for mechanical grip now so they can take aero off.... That's the difference the Merc has now and all the others have not enough of. If they take off aero to go down the chutes with the Merc then they suffer from not enough grip in the corners.....

As long as most the air is going over the top of the body work it will effect getting close enough to pass. Now if they get too close they give up nose down force and that causes understeer on entry to corners and wears front tires and reduces handling .... It's all about the best balance of all parameters..... and right now the Merc's have it...... and Ferrari is close but still not on par....yet!

Go big Red!

They could allow under airflow like Indy cars but really there is no "perfect" solution..... Chassis design is so important to get maximum initial grip so they can get away with less aero.

They are lacking mechanical grip now due to the rules. Let them widen the car a bit, allow slightly bigger tires and change the compound to generate more grip. Tires are everything in all forms of racing. Take some aero off the car in the amount of gain from mechanical grip. These changes would result in...Ta Dah..... better racing.

This season's F1 qualifying is definitely crap.  Last year's format was yards better, but still crap-ish. I was a fan of the old days when everybody was out running and any lap counted.

And they managed to do that with stopwatches.

The Karting race link is pretty cool. The racing is tight mainly because they are running the same engine it appears. The track width to wheelbase ratio is much greater than F1 so great lateral loading. No wings just mechanical grip, equal power and top drivers. Very good stuff.

When I raced these sprint karts many years ago you could generate enough lateral load to break ribs. I did it twice. Makes for a rough rest of the season.

F1 could be this good, kind of, maybe, but you would have to issue motors from one manufacturer. All motors to be dyno tested to prove they have the same power. Small wings, no DRS and bigger/more grippy tires that last 25 laps is all it takes.

Most likely not going to happen. The decision makers are out of touch and make their decisions based upon how much money it will generate.

Very sad.

Under Airflow and skirts with a smaller less efficient front wing inside the front tires would be a step in the right direction, but of course the front wings in 2017 will be even bigger.

Jean Todt was quoted as saying, paraphrasing as I don't have it right in front of me, "...yes, we are aware of the social media but we will not be driven by what the fans think is right for Formula 1". Really......... What he fails to realize is what they are selling is US, THE FANS. That is the product they sell to sponsors and advertisers. It is no different then TV, Radio, Newspapers, Baseball, Football etc. We are the product, they are the juice we like to suckle and therefore are vital to the success of all of them. So to say our opinion does not matter means he is either crazy, a megalomaniac, out of touch with the reality of economics or just plain stupid or any combination there of. You pick.

Tony is right on, the old system was good, exciting most of the time and fair for both the fans and the sport, IMHO.

OK, here is the SKY Sports article link.

Here is his quote:

"I am aware, but we cannot be guided only by social media. We are aware of social media, but social media should not be what guides us to run our organisation," said the FIA president."

So I guess the question is who is complaining in the social media. Answer, most everyone. Why would this not be an important thing to consider.
