The race run on 4/11/16 was the final of three contests prior to the OSCAR race at STR to be held on Saturday, April 16. Over the past three weeks, several participants have been searching for the best chassis/motor/body combination for the upcoming big event. Several of the Cottage Grove Boys have attended at least one of the tune-up events and we are happy to see Mark Colby back in Oregon and racing with us. Locals have also stepped up their game.

This week we had a good crowd of 11 competitors for the races. Seven locals were joined by three entrants for Cottage Grove and Mark from Grants Pass. Track conditions were quite good with a new record set in Sports Car.

Lastly, I would like to give a shout out to Jack and Bob for mentoring our newest driver, Scott Carroll. Jack has provided a plethora of bodies to Scott so that he can race in nearly every class run at STR. Thanks also to James for providing a scratch-built Econo chassis. Both Bob and Jack have provided help in setting up Scotts cars and giving him driving tips. Attracting and keeping new members is always difficult because of the steep learning curve and inability of new drivers to field competitive scratch-built cars. Thanks guys!!!!!!

Highlights
  • In the Vintage NASCAR race, it was Bob, Jack, James and Ron Johnson finished first through fourth respectively. Others were far behind. Many chassis/motor combinations were used. Although OSCAR rules allow Supers to be used, all locals ran either Deathstars or ProSlot 16Ds
  • In the sports car race Jacks Ferrari 348 finished first and set a new lap total record of 93.3 laps. Ron Johnson finished second while Bob was third.

Vintage NASCAR

The race was a very close contest with Bob, Jack, James and Ron Johnson in contention for the top step of the podium. Ron Johnson ran his 55 Chevy with a super while the others ran either Deathstars or ProSlot 16Ds. Consistency was the key to success for Bob who had the slowest lap times of the top four and yet pulled out a victory with a fine 95.61% consistency. Jack ran a very good race and finished second only a single section behind Bob. James was third only three sections behind Jack. What a great race!

Sports Car Race

In the third of three Sports Car Contests prior to the upcoming OSCAR race it was Jack (93.3 laps), Ron Johnson (91.8 laps) and Bob (90.4 laps), Rich (90.3 laps) for first through fourth respectively.

A few observations are in order.
  • Jack finished first in the OSCAR Sports Car race held at STR last year with his gold Ferrari 348. He has yet to race that winning ride in any of the three tune-up races. However, his red Ferrari 348 won contest #3 and set a new total lap record of 93.3.
  • Ron Johnsons green Ferrari 612 is definitely a contender. It held the record of 92.6 laps until contest #3 and is third of all sports cars in terms of fast lap times. Unpainted, the 612 is legal in the OSCAR Sports Car class with the width at the rear wheel opening measuring 3.25 inches. With paint, it is a bit over the legal limit. Although Bob, the race director, indicated that the car would be legal for the upcoming OSCAR race, Ron indicated that he would decline to run the 612, instead opting for his Ferrari Modena (still a very competitive ride. It ran a 4.990 fast lap in contest #1)
  • Bob ran his #1 chassis with a Jaguar XJ220 body. The car was powered by a Deathstar. The car was obviously under powered. Even so, Bob managed a fine third place finish in contest #3. Bob indicated that he will run either a Super or a ProSlot 16D motor with a lighter body (either a Testarossa or a Ferrari F50). Look out guys, Bob will challenge for the top spot on the podium in the OSCAR race
  • James ran his green Ferrari Modena in contest #3. With a bit better motor the car could challenge for the top step of the podium. James Ferrari 458 may be a better ride. The 458 is second only Jacks purple Modena in terms of fastest laps in the class. I am not sure what chassis/motor/body combination James will run in the OSCAR race
  • Mark Colbys yellow Modena is a very competitive ride and is capable of running a sub five second lap. Unfortunately, Mark will be unable to attend the OSCAR race.
  • Bob Iles ran a very competitive Ferrari Modena. Bobs fast lap was a competitive 5.094 seconds. A bad heat on the blue lane put Bob out of contention for a podium finish in contest #3. Bob will certainly be in the hunt for a podium finish in the upcoming OSCAR race.
  • Unfortunately, Rich, your humble correspondent, will be unable to attend the big OSCAR event due to a prior commitment. This is a disappointment because my Ferrari Modena powered with a good Super is a competitive ride. With some help from Bob and others, I will attempt to cobble together a race report.
