Phil,

He could not avoid another car car that came into his lane and broke his guide and perhaps something else.

Eddie,

I only took pics of the podium cars so what you see is all that will be posted.

Do have a short video of the final Main that will be posted as soon as YouTube finishes processing it.

This was actually just a test of the video capabilities of my camera and it worked pretty well. Less than a minute in length.

This is the Can-Am final Main on Saturday.

I would be interested in knowing how the lap times compare with the actual period these cars are suppose to mimic.

The tracks are so radically different, any comparison is pointless.

Regardless, it isn't vintage racing, it's racing scratchbuilt cars.

Dennis,

Your assumption that modern Retro cars are "suppose[d] to mimic" some prior period of slot racing is misplaced, though many seem to want to apply that interpretation.

Referring to IRRA® Retro, the ruleset defines new and unique classes utilizing selected aspects of slot cars raced in the '60s and '70s, as well as more modern elements. As has been said many times, IRRA® Retro is not meant to replicate or mimic any types of slot cars that previously existed.

Obviously Retro cars are much faster than '60s and '70s unlimited slot cars for a number of reasons: better and faster tracks, better tires, far better magnets in today's cheap motors than could even be purchased in the early days, etc.

Trying to compare the slot cars that were raced four or five decades ago with modern Retro cars isn't IMO a very meaningful exercise.

Fourteen entries for the F1 race today.

Qualifying is now underway. This is the first F1 race ever held at The Track, which BTW celebrated its first full year of operation yesterday.

Retro F1 qualifying results:

1) Joe "Chubby" Salzman - 3.651 secs
2) Will Brinkley - 3.689
3) John Weaver - 3.708
4) Bob Hughes - 3.716
5) Ron Hershman - 3.733
6) Terry Watson - 3.755
7) Gil Gundersen - 3.759
8) Rich Attee - 3.791
9) Bob Foster - 3.868
10) Bobby Robinson - 3.905
11) Tom Harrington - 3.917
12) Nicky Formosa - 3.965
13) Jay Guard - 4.012
14) Jeff Green - 4.033*

* For those who don't know, Jeff Green was the 2000 Busch Series Champion, after finishing second in that series multiple times. He was also the pole winner at the 2003 Daytona 500, driving for Richard Childress Racing. Jeff raced in the Xfinity series race at Bristol yesterday, and finished 26th, four laps down. Then he came to The Track last night to practice with his F1 car.

Now there's a diehard racer! This is his first-ever F1 slot car race.

Race format is going to be two Semis, two minutes on, two minutes off, with the top four from each Semi advancing to the final Main, which will be three minutes on, two off.

Racers are warming up and the B Semi will begin shortly.

Dennis,

The answer to your question is that in 1969 similar cars on 155' King tracks were turning ~20 laps in 2 minutes and now they turn ~30.

Simple question, simple answer.

As has been pointed out, there are many reasons for the 10 lap difference, but that's the facts.

Retro F1 A Semi results:

1) John Weaver - 242.79 laps, best lap of 3.783 in green
2) Ron Hershman - 242.67, 3.751 in green
3) Joe "Chubby" Salzman - 242.55, 3.798 in green
4) Bob Foster - 229.19, 3.961 in green
5) Gil Gundersen - 229.07, 3.929 in orange
6) Jay Guard - 218.60, 4.017 in green
7) Tom Harrington - 192, 4.043 in green

Weaver, Hershman, Salzman, and Foster will advance to the final Main.

First three finishers cover less than a quarter of a lap!

Doesn't take a seer to know that the final Main promises to be a heck of a race...

Thanks, Brinkley. Couldn't have don't it without your help. You were right there, man.

Congrats to Terry on his F1 win. Truly I couldn't have picked a more deserving person. He's one of the good guys.

Ross with his big run in Cam-Am with a third place finish.

Tracy ran a good race. I'm sure there will.be some tweaks for the next one. For the most part the PS-FK was the motor of choice and it ran well. I ran one motor for all day in Can-Am; it never slowed once. Bud built me one heck of a car to race down there.

It was awesome to race with Chubby for the first time. He's one cool dude.

Ray at REM raceway helps me so much big thanks to him.

Can't wait for the next one. Thanks also to everyone who had a hand in putting on the event.

For being Top Qualifier, Joe "Chubby" Salzman wins a race commemorative Retro car. See the earlier post regarding the builder and painter.

Never forget that first place goes to the racer with the MOST laps, not the racer with the FASTEST lap

My reportage ends now, as I've posted all the pics I took to document this initial event. Hope members have found it interesting and informative.

Thanks to all the nice racers who kindly listened to my usual ramblings.
