Last Saturday Gary passed away at BPR during the "I Want Fools" drag race he organized. This has been a major blow for not only his family but also to the entire drag racing community. Gary was truly everyone's friend.

If you've spent anytime at BPR then you will recognize Gary's smile and constant laugh, he was one of the most easygoing guys you could ever meet. While he'd often jokingly poke fun at the "roundy round" racers, he'd be the first to offer you a car to come try drag racing. He was known for assisting anyone, even if you were about to go heads-up against him.

I've only known Gary a few years, but it feels like forever. I was part of a small group that would text day and night, and Gary would continually crack me up. I'm going to miss his friendship.

Gary is survived by his mother, wife, son, and incredibly talented teenage daughter. My thoughts and prayers are with them.

Gary was also one hell of a drag racer, heads-up or bracket, whatever, he was a star!!! Gary will always be a star in my broken heart!

Thank you, Slotblog, for this space... and everyone out there, hug and love your family and friends, as none of us know how long we have.

I'm truly stunned. Gary and I were friends. He was an active member of KMR's Short List and Engineering group. An intense and self sacrificing racer and happy, loving human willing to help and provide. A true student and teacher of this hobby. His passing leaves a great hole.

I seriously am having a hard time accepting this has happened. He rest peacefully now. Love ya, Gary... like a brother... one of mine.

Very sad news indeed. Gary always had a big smile and useful advice for anyone coming into BPR to participate or just watch the racing.

My condolences to his family and friends.

RIP, Gary...

Did he pass away at the track? He seems too young. Terrible.

Gary was a great friend and will be greatly missed. He was helping me to build a Willys drag car, now I will never forget the moments we shared talking about it.

RIP, Gary.

Reading all the post on Slotblog and Facebook about Gary Lum I can only agree that he was a great guy and a joy to race with. He was a true friend of Buena Park Raceway and a personal friend of Debby and !. He will be missed every time we hold a race. Our prayers go out to his wife, daughter, and son.

Let his passing serve as a reminder to us all. Time is short and it is something you can't save up, extend or reclaim. So if there is a family member you haven't talked to for some time or aren't at peace with, seek them out and tell them you love them. If there is a friend or a fellow racer who you last talked harshly to, extend that hand of friendship and say, "Brother, I'm sorry.". Remember time is short and it's ticking away. To all I may have wronged, "I'm sorry."

I did not know Gary, but, that is sad. And to Jim at BPR, those were the nicest words anyone could have said. Very nice, Jim.

I'm at a loss for words. It just hurts to know what it must be like for his family.

Are there any thoughts to having a "Memorial Race" for Gary? Perhaps a fundraiser for his family?

It would be good if we can do something to help them. This was so sudden, I'm sure they are not prepared for such a tragic event in their family.  Who could be?

Tim,

I'm hearing that a memorial drag race for Gary is in the planning stages, once I find out more info I'll post here.

I know the drag racers would welcome even the roundy-round racers.  :)

I'll make it a point to attend!! I'm not a drag racer, but Gary was a great guy and deserves all the respect we can give him and his family. It's good to be able to give back a little to one of our own!!

Announcing the Gary Lum Memorial drag race, June 18 at BPR. Portions of all entry fees go to Gary's family.

Even if you are not a drag racer come out and celebrate Gary amongst friends. I'm sure a donation box for Gary's family will be there.
