Even if we could convince the company to make slot boxes of equal quality and perhaps a little lighter weight, almost none of us would be able to afford one!

Awwww... they wouldn't be all that expensive. Heck, I bought a tool chest like that from Harbor Freight for $69 and it was made just like that... egggzackly.

Well, Jim, I admit that there are knock-offs, some of them quite close.

But I've seen many Gerstner chests over the years and their quality is off the charts. Set a real one beside a knock-off and compare. Take a close look at the quality of the wood the guy's selecting in the early seconds of the video.

These are considered the Rolls-Royce of tool chests.

These boxes are prized possessions to tool and die makers. I wish I still had my Grandfather's box from the '30s.

I still use a small cherry box from 1977. Proud to say they are made here in my home town of Dayton, OH.

That Gerstner box in the video is probably over $2,000.!! Beautiful work, but you certainly have to pay for it, too! Love to have one, just not going to!   :)   :)

She's real fine, my 409!!!

Gerstner has moved much of its production to Asia....

I have a real 'mercian chest sitting around. Has some pretty cool slot stuff in it... :D

Have you checked out the cabinets they offer? I knew a shop owner that had one. Many of the members of this board would have loved to have that cabinet and what was in it.

Mine was nearly $400 back in 1982.

I spotted a Gerstner tool chest at Chuck Gambo's house, last night.

He was quick to point out it was a knock-off (more accurately, made outside the USA).

Note the plate identifying it as Gerstner International.

OK so mine is filled and dug deep in my workspace so I won't be tipping it over or anything, but how do you tell:

1) If it's MIC

and

2) it's a knock-off.

Maybe I answered my own question after a quick visual review on eBay.

Mine does not have the riveted tag on the front and the hardware is not marked.

So I guess the manufacturer isn't even bothering to pass it off as a counterfeit.

I'm gonna guess that it's MIC.

And I'm not a big China-phobe, but I really like my tools made in the USA (then Germany, then Japan, in that order).

Yeah, mine is that crappy yellow oak color instead of that nice dark red color.

I used Chuck's term, knock-off, which wasn't the most accurate way to describe what he had.

I edited my original post.

From the frequently asked questions section of the website:

What are Gerstner International Chests?
The mission of Gerstner International is to seek out manufacturing partners the world over to enable Gerstner & Sons to offer its customers economically priced imported wood products built to a benchmark of quality that will proudly uphold the Gerstner name.

OK, no question is stupid, remember?

What are the little mirrors for, to pick errant aluminum chips out of your teeth?

I removed mine.

No, to pick those chips out of your eyeball...

A machinist's chest is his office...

I do everything there...

I lay out parts.

Do my math.

Store my keys, wallet, watch, and cellphone

Eat lunch.

And comb my hair before I leave and lock my box...

Like I say my office!!!

By the way I don't have the deluxe office... my dad gave me a Kennedy for graduation from trade school... still a fine box!!!

And here it is a Gerstner slot car box:

IMG_20160522_182604.jpg

This is the box of Jeff Sarkisian of Skidmarks raceway as seen at the 2016 Worlds at Port Jeff. He says a number of racers at Skidmarks
have them.

Cheers,

PS: Congrats to Retro East racer Joe 'Chubbie' Salzman for winning the Group 7 Pro Worlds Championship!

Definitetly to be used in a clean environment. Slot car box would be ideal, more so than a machinist box IMO.
